About this Design
The black and white image features a stylized anchor with a curved, coiled fish or serpent wrapped around it. The letters 'AL' appear on the left side and 'DVS' on the right. The design has an intricate, hand-drawn aesthetic reminiscent of vintage or classical illustrations.
@emeggs
A dolphin (one of the fastest creatures in the sea) intertwined with an anchor (a symbol of stopping) communicates the Aldine Press motto "Make Haste Slowly", or, in Latin as "festina lente". This motto means to operate with a good balance of motivated urgency and unrushed and careful patient diligence. This logo for Aldine Press, appearing around the year 1500 (and now long in the public domain), represents humanist and scholar Aldus Manutius' publishing house and press. Aldine Press is considered one of the greatest publishing houses of the Italian Renaissance, producing the world's first affordable pocket-sized editions of classic Latin and Greek works, and introducing italic typefaces for the first time (which reflected humanist philosophy due to allowing more text on a page and thus making books more affordable for everyday people). Manutius wanted to bring knowledge and books to everyday people, and he did just that! Did you know small book formats and italic type were derived from humanist philosophy?
