Anti-establishment, pro-individual freedoms, and definitely DIY ethics
Relevant, right? While mainstream ideas about what punk is typically center around the loud, aggressive genre of rock music by the same name, the true core punk ethos is that and SO much more. The great Joe Strummer once said, “Punk rock isn’t something you grow out of. Punk rock is an attitude, and the essence of that attitude is ‘give us some truth’“.
While the spirit of punk may come off as anti- this and non- that, there are a lot of pros, too: self-expression, creativity, community engagement, progressive philosophies, celebrating the individual, and acceptance. Of course, anti-authoritarianism, anti-corporatism and anti corporate greed, and anti-consumerism are also hugely important.
This all translated into a set of punk aesthetics for the movement: underground, minimalist yet bold, iconoclastic, and a clear set of satirical sensibilities. Think: classic punk rock album covers, zines, riot grrrls, posters, and clothing. Look to collage, gritty textures, a monochromatic palette, torn paper, bold typography, and, of course, safety pins. Hey, ho, let’s go… wild on some incredible punk-inspired art!
