Are those two photos? Cool. Haven't seen that before.
Put some variation into the c&p'd birds so it's not so obvious they were c&p'd. I know it's your first design, but a little extra effort goes a long way. ^^
I say keep the photos for all the reasons already mentioned, as well as the black-and-white for the classic feel. But try making the window/painting colored, that would add to the trippiness as well as make your design pop a little more.
Color window (or at least backround sky of window)... $5!

The phoenix is lovely. Aaaagh, this could be so gorgeous if you could rework the pipe! Anyways, yes, the art on the bird is gorgeous, but the pipe is really simplistic (I would say lazy, but I know you must've worked on the bird a lot, so you can't be a lazy artist...). Add some more detail and effort on that. Make the pipe as beautiful and shaded as the bird.
Try making the pipe 3/4 face us, instead of the sideways profile view of the pipe. Like it's being smoked at us.
P.S. I love the concept!
