@ LINK2DPAST: The shirt colour, black, must still be counted as the eighth colour. Besides, i felt a white grid was too strong behind the desaturated colours on the pieces. I originally used a light grey, but found the dark blue complemented the tetrominoes best and allowed me to work with the limit.

Originally i used a light grey on the grid. However, in order to make sure all my pieces (tetrominoes) used separate colours -like the real game does- without going over the 8 colour limit i chose to use the darker blue of the right piece after much deliberation.
I felt that it was far more critical to the design that the pieces were all their own colours. Also, i wanted the grid to be a more subtle element and step back from the tetrominoes a bit.
A different perspective on the classic block puzzle game. Hope it evokes some nostalgia.
