  • You've a point. When I handed in my "revamped" portfolio, I got back a lot of praise after having gone with their suggestions and criteria. My old mentor got word of this, how I don't know, but she wasn't happy at all. I got an earful on the traditional arts, so I explained to her the position. Her response? "Oh. Oh dear."

  • Steve, I know. When I was in university, I felt the same exact way. Life does move us in circles, spinning us so fast that it is a wonder why gravity just doesn't fling us up into the atmosphere. However, that is one thing I didn't see; in this field, the field of graphic design, you are competing with thousands, if not tens of thousands, of other people. The more you know of the industry, both book-based and people-based, the greater your chances are of blowing your competition out of the water.

Try this; Five minutes a day for one week, put a textbook from one of your classes beside your computer or take it with you wherever you go. When you have five minutes of nothing happening, open the book and read two or three pages. Make sure you bring a pencil or pen. After you're done reading, write yourself one question from the book that you didn't understand or a concept you don't fully grasp. Go to class and ask your professor. You'll be surprised how much we feed off of that. If your professor actually gets the feeling you've read the book, you'll see them open up and explode with excitement (or they should if they're a good teacher).

You never know. Maybe you'll get a few ideas from reading your book. The one a lot of the schools I teach at use the GDS book. Graphic Design School. From reading this book, I've given myself an immense amount of ideas for my own and for the work I assign in my classes.

  • KB, Lol. Let's hope none of my students come across this blog. Now I'm getting paranoid.

Resistance, oh yeah. Those who did do the reading are getting an unexpected surprise email in the next few days. In it? Now, I wouldn't want to give that way, but let us just say it involves pizza.

  • Thanks for the warm welcomes! I love my little puppy, Tiffany. He's a total goof ball, but he's my goof ball.
