New submission, help!

This is only my second submission here on Threadless and I would love some feed back for future designs! This one is already up for voting (for the monsters challange) so if you want to check that out here: http://thrdl.es/~/1IQo !

Also I tried to get a little creative with the model picture, and wanted to know if it was too much. I get carried away at times :p

Lastly, if anyone has any tips or ideas on how I could have executed this design better I would really like to know. It would really help me out when creating designs next time!

Thanks, yo! ;)

It's a nice design - you've got good skills when it comes to line work and shading and stuff so a very good effort for someone so new!

As for the model.. The floating head does freak me out a bit, but it is the monsters challenge so maybe that's ok. I would consider using as few slides as possible though for a couple of reasons, first being compression (the more slides you have the smaller the file size for each needs to be) and the second being effort - I don't want to click through 3 slides to vote if everything I want can be on one or two. In this case you prob could have got away with 2 as the second floating head slide isn't really necessary.

Lastly, concept. I've already said I like your style and while I get the self portrait concept of this design, I would have like to have seen more to it. maybe some context in the background to make it humorous or to give it a twist. It's 90% there, I think it maybe just needed one little thing more. Oh, and consider making a WIP blog before you sub next time - if you're doing good work (which you are) or have a good idea, sometimes a comment or suggestion from a member here can be all you need to push it up a notch!

Anyway, like I said, excellent work for only your second sub - I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Same here, i think the design is well executed, nice shading and color scheme, but i wouldn't buy it. The concept just isn't strong enough to stand on it's own, a family portrait is not fun to me. If you wanted to appeal to more people i would've represented monsters friends or lovers going crazy on photos they would have taken in a photo booth http://www.google.fr/imgres?um=1&hl=fr&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:fr:official&biw=909&bih=361&tbm=isch&tbnid=I89aRwMBsgjJgM:&imgrefurl=http://now-here-this.timeout.com/2012/07/05/snap-happy-londons-best-black-and-white-photo-booths/&docid=IHS37XOfWFi9XM&imgurl=http://now-here-this.timeout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/photobooth.jpg&w=1000&h=1090&ei=r7YkUbPaMYOn0QWWj4GQDw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=337&sig=100357646014658757649&page=3&tbnh=152&tbnw=151&start=18&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,i:147&tx=78&ty=92 like this So much more fun and happier!

bigmind

for me it looks funny, the mother is smiling thinking she is great the father is trying to smile but he just don't care and baby who don't even know what is happening happy with his three eyes and one tooth :D the work line and shading are great, its missing the background ,but i think if u made an end to the bottom part of the family (cause it looks floating for me) maybe connect the lines to the bottom part of the frame so it's like covering it or something like that, other than that your design looks awesome :).

Dreamspace

This is such a nice work for a second sub. You do have skills and i agree with digsy's comment. It lacks that 20% to make it a great design. Love the second pair of eyes it is super attractive.

You should post a wip blog. From my own experience. If your work is good your wip blog will get attention and invaluable comments that would make you go that 20%.

Dreamspace

imho. That second slide is not cool :-( but then it might be just me.

Thanks guys! I appreciate your suggestions and totally agree. And I'll definitely do a Wip blog next time :)

That would have been a really cute idea!!

I also have another design that finally got approved and is up for scoring. I would like some feed back on this one as well if anyone's up for it ;D ..am I heading in the right direction yet? hah

The Scarey Stains design is really nice! Since the monsters are so random maybe they could have been arranged more randomly on the shirt too like actual stains but that's a minor nitpick really.

carlyberry

I don't know why I didn't think of that, that's a good idea! I have quickly learned to get critiques BEFORE submitting haha. eh beginner problems. And thanks for your feed back :)

Dreamspace

Love the second one. Also i saw in one of those blogs you frivolously mentioned your designs and request a vote from the blogger. People here don't like such thing. I know you didn't know just saying for you to keep in mind. Do not post links of your design. It by default shows above your comments right?

Keep the subs coming. :-)

carlyberry

Thanks! and yeah I wouldn't say "frivolously" ..was only really posting my design on vote for vote-ish forums, because let's face it, that's what anyone is doing on those kind of threads anyway. I'm starting to annoy myself though haha. Don't want a mob of Threadheads attacking me so I'll quit dat' shizzz :p

GoldenGod02

I never thought a stain could be so adorable. I love it! It would be super cool camouflage for the actual stains on my kids shirts =)

unicorndinosaurs

Fruity's photobooth idea sounds hilarious if the faces are executed right

Adilanam

For your first monster design the photobooth idea suggested would definitely make it more playful (the only worry in that would be the composition, because if it were one entire photo strip it might look a little awkward and maybe too small, but you could make it work!). Your second design however, is actually really cute. :)

(p.s. just a random question, does anybody know what thread is best in asking for critiques?)

carlyberry

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Adilanam: I think people are just posting them under the tips&tricks or design threads and just starting a blog post. GoldenGod02: that's the best part about that design >;)

Adilanam

Thank you carlyberry, just hoping for help before a deadline. Do you know if they'll still accept a submission if it's a day before or on the deadline, because I read that they need a couple of days to submit it; will the design just be dropped if it's not submitted in advance?

carlyberry

pretty sure you can submit on the deadline day and it will just still take the normal few days for it to be approved. not 100% sure though, I'm still very new here. :p hope that helped?

amaara

those stains are adorableee, what a great idea :)

bisforb
