“They” is officially 2019’s Word of the Year! Linguists, typography nerds, and lovers of language—have we got a design challenge for you. It’s time to celebrate the new year by giving the old a proper send-off using language. In September, Merriam-Webster expanded the official definition of “they” to include its use as a pronoun referring to a person who identifies as nonbinary. Speak your peace and create new designs that feature “they” in your favorite font or set in scenes that tell it like it is. Sharpen those pencils and have your dictionary ready—it’s time to design for the Word of the Year!
