A Threadless Quilt! - Updated Oct. 10th!!

by ladykat / general /

Or two... in the works. :-D

So awhile ago I posted a blog asking for ruined Threadless shirts - shirts that people just don't wear anymore, and aren't able/don't want to sell. The plan? Make a quilt from those tees!

Some people responded, and I've been able to get started!!!

chelly and colin_Brights each sent me some tees, the fabulous Craig Shimala sent me a whole bunch of test prints and whatnot, and of course I had some shirts to add from my collection.

UPDATE 1: jensantarelli , andyg, and ir0cko also sent tees, and there are a few others heading my way! Or so I hear. ;-)

UPDATE 2: funkie fresh, telaine, pyr4lis donated tees to the cause! Also, I bought jersey knit sheets for the backs and borders of the quilt, and they just came in the mail. Yay!

UPDATE 3: blonde8007 also sent shirts!!

In fact, I now have enough tees to make 2 quilts. So in addition to the one I'm making for myself, I'm making a quilt to auction/raffle off for charity. (Charity TBD - I have some ideas, but if anyone else knows of a great charity, send me the details.) EDIT: I wanted anyone who really cared to have a shot, not just the people with the largest check... I couldn't figure out how to do an online raffle with all the weird laws for raffles, so instead, I'm having a contest to win the quilt!

Here are the tees I have, all cut up into 11x11 inch squares. Their final sewn size will be about 10x10 inches, and the quilts will be 7 squares x 7 squares. So each quilt will have 49 squares with printed designs. (Plus there will be a solid-colored border - the back will also be solid.) The final size - approximately 80" x 80" - will be large enough to go on a full- or queen-sized bed.

UPDATE 4: Quilt for charity contest is being constructed! And I've even got photo evidence!!

Here are the squares for the quilt I'll auction/raffle off for charity that I'm giving away in the contest. I put fusible interfacing on the back of all 49 squares - took way more time than I anticipated!

And columns of squares, just waiting to be sewn together!

Three columns sewn together! 4 more to go!

UPDATE 5: Top is almost done, just needs the border

UPDATE 6: Almost done! Just need to finish quilting it.

Threadless quilt - almost done!

Yeah, I'm really excited!!

Kissme and Tom, sometimes they send out those kind of tees in junk drawer prizes too :-)

deathcabfortom

lol. I never win anything. Oh well.

You're really crafty!

kissmeimshitfaced

Coolie, it's gonna be a wicked quilt, good luck!

ecky_ducky

AWESOME!

That's so cool Ms Kat. SO COOL.

you should make a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tubeman from them. and put craigs face on it.

Daniel San

I want one. This will be awesome. Great idea, Kate!

Thanks guys! Hehe, I am crafty :-P

I don't think the tees would hold air very well, so the inflatable arm flailing tubeman would be all deflated, and that'd be sad.

you could paint the inside with latex

kissmeimshitfaced

I love wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tubeman...

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Where am I gonna get that much latex?

Srsly

SheepMan22

wow this is so awesome im makin curtains for the VW bus im gettin out of some old threadless shirts but its nothin compared to what your doin

d3d
d3d profile pic Alumni

if i had faith in anyone to find huge quantities of latex it'd be you. the mythbusters don't seem to have any trouble.

Noobits

have you seen the beer ad with those tubemen dancing and stuff? its amazing.
cool quilt kate. are you gonna use an overlocker?

Noobits

I know one of my art supply companies have latex by the gallon

Verdana

Oh my goodness, what a cool project!

d3d

i see that ad all the time, and i can't help but notice the dodgy girl dancing in her underwear every time.

Noobits

where is she?

d3d
d3d profile pic Alumni

right near the end. it might be a bikini. either way she's a shithouse dancer.

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Sheepman, I bet those will be sweet. You gonna show us pics?

Mythbusters has a budget that far surpasses mine. Unfortunately.

Noobits - I don't have one of those (though it would be sweet to have one), but thankfully jersey knit holds tightly, and I read accounts of people who have done this sort of thing before - the raw edges should be fine.

Noobits

oh cool ill have to keep an eye put

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Verdana, I'm super excited!

Noobits

*out for her and take better notice.
Mm ok, I would be a shit quilt maker, no patience for it.unlike my mum. and my sewing would not be straight.

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Noobits, I'm gonna take my time with this... try not to rush. So it might take a bit but I think it'll be worth it.

Marble, thanks for the link! I'll look into that charity.

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Thanks Adrienne! Me neither :-P

SheepMan22

yea i will when i get them done and put them in my bus but i wont be gettin my bus for 2 or 3 months but they wont be nearly as awesome as your quilts

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

I can't wait to see them... I think making Threadless curtains for a VW bus is a stellar idea - so fitting!

hanzabean

But still sheep, it's got an automatic cool factor for being a VW bus. Add threadless to that, and I don't even know!

SheepMan22

yea thats what i was thinkin cuz originally i was gonna use old band shirts but i figured threadless shirts would be way better

harpo25
harpo25 profile pic Alumni

awesome idea!

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Thanks!

And yeah Sheepman, Hanza's totally right

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Thanks Fiona! And, no worries, I really only want shirts that people are basically looking to get rid of but feel too guilty about throwing away :-)

OOOOH LADYKAT! i'll bring you some of my tees in chicago...i have a whole bunch i dont wear/havent worn.

they're all girly smalls though so the prints might not be as big?

Noobits

Curtains for a VW bus (Kombi) That is so cool, I have one of those and It needs new curtains....

valorandvellum
valorandvellum profile pic Alumni

That's a really good idea to donate money to charity too!

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Jan, that would be so awesome!

I've already cut up some girly smalls - they work just fine. The only ones that are problematic are the tiny kid's tees... I have 2 I couldn't use for this, but I'll use them for something else.

andyg
andyg profile pic Alumni

Great idea! I can't wait to see how these will turn out!

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Priscilla, yeah, I was really hoping I'd have enough to do 2 quilts for just that reason... I'll work on getting the charity one done first too.

valorandvellum
valorandvellum profile pic Alumni

Just save the kids tees for when it's babymaking time.

ladykat
ladykat profile pic Alumni

Thanks Andy!

ladykat
