The Guide to posting images (and links) (and youtubes zomg)
Many people seem to find the posting of images in comments a little puzzling. Here's a quick guide to make it all smooth sailing.
1. Hosting images
Except for your avatars and submission slides Threadless does not actually host any of your pictures. You can't upload them here straight from your computer, you have to upload them to an image hosting site and link from there. A few popular options are:
Flickr: A huge amount of storage space but user interface is complicated and getting the actual image urls is a little tricky.
Imgur: Not just for lulz! Make an account if you host pictures here, it lets you keep track of them. Limited amount of pictures in accounts but easy user interface.
Photobucket: Pretty easy to use, can be a little slow.
You can also link from a blog or Tumblr, for example.
2. Linking the image
First off, you need the direct url to the image. Many of the image hosting sites offer all kinds of bits of code for different forums but we need the Direct one. It looks like this for example:
It starts with http and ends in the filename extension: .gif, .jpg or .png. Nothing more, no [IMG] tags or anything like that. One way to get this is to right-click on the image and choosing the Copy image URL option. So copy that. Next step:
There's the camera icon...
That's where you paste the image url...
And click OK...
Good job! You don't have to touch the "enter image description" text if you don't feel like it. It's just something to display if the image isn't loading for some reason. Just don't mess up any of the code bits in the comment box! You can see in the preview box that it was a great success.
3. Web links
Linking to other places around the Web is just as easy. First the link icon:
In this example I'm creating a link to the Threadless front page, so that's the url I pasted there. Click OK.
There's the link. Now here it's a good idea to change the "enter link description" to something else because that's your clickable link! Like so:
Give yourself a hi-five!
Now, one more thing after the basics.
4. Advanced Master Class: Images as clickable links
Now, if you now a bit of basic html you can actually use it to make these. But there's a neat little trick that you can do with the image and link insertion tools.
First, create the link to the address you want. For example to your submission in the scoring.
Second, insert the image you want. You can copy the url of one of your submission slides straight from the scoring page, for example.
When you have those, you need to select and cut the bit of code for your image (the whole line) and paste it in the place of the link description text. Like this:
If you mess up any of the brackets it will mess up the link! But there you have it.
HOW DO I YOU TUBES ???
Easy peasy! On the youtube video page first click "Share", then "Embed". Copy that whole bunch of code in the box. Paste that whole thing in the comment box as it is. No clicking on the link icon or anything. Just paste, and post for PROFIT
