the book is amazing.
I actually have never read the book, Sir_Minimus, but I can completely see where you are coming from, there are so many movies out there that fail to translate to the screen. However, if you set aside any preconceived notions or even a relationship with the book, you have to fall in love with the cinematography, the acting, the timelessness of the movie. Or not ;-)
I found this interesting though-
