MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Plastics are flooding our oceans - and the list of marine species harmed by plastic debris keeps growing. From tiny zooplankton and fish to sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals, tens of thousands of marine creatures are suffering from entanglement or plastic ingestion. Plastics never truly disappear. They break down into smaller and smaller pieces - microplastics - that act like magnets for toxic pollutants. When eaten by fish, these chemical-laden fragments can travel up the food chain... and end up on our plates. Plastic pollution doesn’t just threaten ocean life. It’s a human problem, too. Plastics have become nearly impossible to avoid - they’re in our food, our water, even the air we breathe. The long-term effects on human health are still being uncovered, but the warning signs are clear. And yet, recycling isn’t enough. Only about 9% of plastic waste has ever been recycled. That’s not a solution - it’s a distraction. To truly fight the plastic crisis, we must reduce the production of single-use plastics at the source. We need action - collective and immediate.
