Some rationale behind this:
Now that even cameraphones have sepia mode (that brownish fake vintage toning), I feel it is being overused - mainly to hide the fact that the photo itself is blurry, badly lit, and generally cr*ppy.
In short, if it looks bad - apply sepia - instant vintage look - post on internets - oohs and aahs. It's a cheap trick, but, as they say, 60% of the time, works every time.
It's just like adding distressed textures to, say, tee shirt designs ;)
PS just in case). Sepia - Latin for cuttlefish (and their brown ink).
