When thinking of the most valuable substances on earth, along with gold, diamonds, Champagne and printer ink, have you ever considered poop?
1. Ambergris - or grey amber, is the waxy grey substance sperm whales form to protect their stomach lining from irritating sharp squid beaks. It is exceptionally valuable and used in the perfume industry as a natural fixative for fragrances - most famously in Chanel no. 5.
2. Guano - or bat poop, is actually also produced by sea birds and seals. Used as a potent organic natural fertilizer and an ingredient for making gunpowder, guano was such a prized resource that wars have been fought over the right to exploit it.
3. Kopi Luwak - or civet coffee, is made from coffee berries that have been eaten, semi-digested and pooped out by the Asian Palm Civet, a critter that looks like its mom was a fox and its dad was a squirrel. Since the original deal is pretty much the most expensive coffee in the world, nasty people wanting to cash in make civet farms where the poor things are force fed coffee cherries and treated like crap. FREE THE CIVETS!!!!!
4. Dogs. Poop. Nom nom nom.
This one is for my high school biology teacher, who taught me that the world is well worth exploring.
