My inspiration was M.C. Escher and MineCraft have the same initials, and further, M.C. Escher's impossible architecture would be right at home in a tool people use to make impossible architecture real.
I made a custom crosshatching shader that allowed me to use textures to influence the shading and over a thousand light objects to achieve the impossible, competing light sources.
The image contains all the classic denizens of Minecraft. The murderous zombie, the murderous skeleton, the murderous enderman, the murderous creeper, and the murderous spider. There are also chickens and pigs, and cows and such, but I'd be more worried about all the murder ones.
