I was reading H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of the Cthulhu," (public domain) and felt that Lovecraft's monster of mythic proportions had been reduced to nothing short of a "cute and plushy" internet meme.
I wanted to reimagine the Cthulhu and make him scary again for in one victim's dream he stood miles high and one look would drive a person "insane."
I won't lie and say H.R. Giger wasn't an inspiration, but I wanted to "throw gasoline" on it and make the eye wander around it.
The medium is called "Fractal Flame": I bashed a bunch of fractals together over and over so as to build the scaffolding for the monster and it exceeding expectations.
