Amusing facts from the insect world!
1. Mantises engage in sexual cannibalism, i.e. they will eat their partner during sex. There are a few theories regarding the reasons behind this behavior, mine is that they never want to wash anyone's socks, ever.
2. Ladybugs are adorable. Awwww :) You know they don't eat grass, right? They terrorize little aphids and munch on them like helpless wriggling crackers. Also when they run into other ladybugs, they poison them and eat their babies. Supercute!!!
3. Bees make honey. How do they make it? Surely they have little pots in which they distill it from pollen in their little kitchens, like your grandma making jam? Nah, they throw it up. Honey is bee vomit. I want you to visualize that next time you're eating it.
4. Finally our little friend, the demodex mite. He lives in your eyelashes. He is tiny and you do not feel him, but he is there. his girlfriend is there too. At night they will crawl out of their home and have sex on your face, then they'll crawl back to your lash. Wiki helpfully suggests "It is quite easy to look for one's own Demodex mites, by carefully removing an eyelash or eyebrow hair and placing it under a microscope." I think I'll pass.
Learning is fun!!! :)
