C + H
Created for Ryder Revolution's Minimalism Challenge.
Inspired Bill Watterson’s comic strip Calvin and Hobbes (1985 - 1995).
I’ve seem a lot of love given to Peanuts on Threadless (and well deserved) but I’ve never seen any Calvin and Hobbes designs. So I felt this design was almost my duty!
One of my all-time favourite comic strips! Possibly needs to be stylised alot more. But would love to see more C & H designs (though not sure their creator would)
love C&H and this looks great but I would have liked to have seen it minimalised even more for the challenge.
great shirt colour
Awesome work. This is one of my favorite from the minimalism contest.
Sorry, it's....Calvin And Hobbes without faces.
these pop culture subs are getting very predictable.
it's disapointing to me how there is hardly no concept behind this one apart from making the characters just unrecognizable enough to bypass copyright.
you're playing with pure fandom really...
sorry to express this on your design but i've been feeling the same way about most 'less' pop culture subs...
i love the design and colours, but if it were higher on the t i'd love it more.
I'm already on a tear on this tonight, so congrats.
Bill Watterson is famously against his characters being licensed. He never did it. He believed it would cheapen his strip and the characters. Any calvin and hobbes merch you've ever seen (including the "famous" bumperstickers of Calvin peeing) has been totally unauthorized by him.
So basically, by using his properties in any way shape or form, you are stating you have absolutely zero respect for him.
There's no wiggling around it. You might not have known, but if you're not that big a fan to know a very basic belief of the author, why the hell were you making a homage anyway? It's an empty, pandering gesture, and it goes directly against the wishes of the man you wish to "honor".
This is where pop culture needs to really take a moment and reflect. This isn't taking a multi-billion property like Star Wars, whose creator is famous for lawsuits. This isn't like downloading Metallica songs against their will. This is like finding a small indie band that has pled with their fans not to download or share their music via download sites, and doing it anyway. And then calling yourself a fan. You're basically disrespecting the expressed wishes of another artist. I'd love to see how you'd react if someone did the same to you.
Wow, this caused a lot of anger while I was sleeping...
I do agree, (and I was totally waiting for this comment from Evan) the design isn't really creative. It's just Calvin and Hobbes done in shapes (a few too many) and without faces. I knew it. And yes this design is blattenly aimed at fans, it pretty much say's so in my description.I knew I'd get criticized, I'm surprise it took this long...
I first posted it on the Ryder's Minimalist Blog and received no real suggestions or criticism. So I submitted it to Threadless and they accepted it to my surprise. I thought it would be declined but I guess it really was 'unrecognizable enough to bypass copyright.' So just like someone who creates another Star Wars design without heeding copyright wrath of George Lucas (see "The Darkside of Gardening") I took a chance. Why? Because it's still fun to share your loves, ideas and art. Plus you never know what's going to 'pass' (how did "Star Sabers" pass and get printed?)
I'd go into PTS catatonic state if this got printed with this design. Like I said, I knew I'd get criticized for this, (I'm just surprise it didn't happen earlier.) Anyways, this ones is still for the fans.
But Adderxyu, 300 word was little much... You could have just seconded the motion...
So you're telling me Bill Watterson didn't licence Calvin peeing to both Chevrolet and Ford? Really?
It's been 15 years since the strip ended and I'm not selling shirts out the back of a van in Times Square.
I haven't made any money off this design and Watterson's characters aren't pissing on anything.
I created a flat, minimalist pop art image of my favourite stripe for fans like me. The rest is up to Threadless...
But shame on Threadless for let this go up for voting! Right? (Like I said above I'd be floored if this was printed.)
"pop culture needs to really take a moment and reflect," that's hilarious! (do you mind if I submit that as a slogan?)
And Calvin & Hobbes doesn't have an indie band status, it was syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate the world's largest independent press syndicate. It's a comic with continued international success.
While I'd love to keep discussing my disrespectful design, but I have to get to practice... I'm in a Metallica tribute band.
I agree that this is just too lacking in concept. The art world is truly becoming too saturated with pop culture references, and the alarming thing is that the more we all support that, the less we are cultivating fresh new ideas and creativity.
All I'll say is this: WWWD?
i really like it! i need a calvin&hobbes shirt
you have a great style. but i agree that i wish there was more concept and not just the characters without faces standing around.
keep on keepin' on
Calivin and Hobbes awesome. Design pretty cool; shirt color perfect contrast.
well how dare
We want this shirt.... really nice !!!!

No, he didn't. Those decals are illegals, and the company manufacturing them are being sued (by either the syndicate or by Watterson's estate, i forgot whom).
That said, Adder is probably a little more pissed than he needs to be. Homages like these are fine in my opinion. Check out these awesome C+H homages - http://www.comicsalliance.com/2009/12/28/more-calvin-and-hobbes-covered-by-artists/
Your design would have been better if it was totally stripped away to it's barebones. Orange+black stripes for Hobbes, and yellow triangles for Calvin, maybe.
Sorry, I was being sarcastic, like anyone would license the same image to 2 competing companies.

Totally Awesome! I'd only ever seen "The Future" one before. Thanks for sharing!
i like it :D
Hah, no probs! I really want me some cool C+H tees. It's quite hard to balance a need to respect the creator's rights with the desire for some bitchin' awesome C+H swag!
