where are the haters huh?
Zero, Cero, Nul, Zéro, Null, ?????, ??, ???
I see you're an even better tosser than you are a tshirt designer pixel...
This shite gets funnier by the minute.
ha, look who's talking douche!
so apparently oddica are hiring 12 year olds to design their tshirts.
i almost want to give you points for your persistance. but i really dont' like your style. all the shirts you submit look the same, and none of them really strike me as clever. its seems you are more concerned about getting a reaction from the comments, than actually trying to make a shirt design that anyone would want. this one especially.
Plenty of people want it, just maybe not as a proportion of the general population. Maybe it's not that the tshirt isn't clever, it could be the person looking at it. It's alot more clever than toast with faces on it at least.
I offer something different to the same old mundane shit that gets subbed each and every day.
you make my point for me, by coming directly back and trying to attack me in your comment, by insinuating that I'm not clever enough to "get" your design.
It seems more people would like to wear toast with faces, as those designs actually get printed.
Yes well that's because people are boring idiots. My designs don't cater to boring idiots, and unlike what you want to suggest, I am not going to sell out just to satisfy people like you.
its ok id rather design something unpopular than design a lump of shit to be popular.
GODDAMMIT I hate it when people spell it "rediculous." Didn't anyone go to elementary school?
And I love all these comments from the wise, experienced designers who have no submissions and have only ranked a handful ...
If you don't get it, don't prove your douchebaggery by spelling out your failures to us in comments. "It is better to be silent and be thought an immigrant, than to type a response and remove all doubt."
I for one love most of your designs.
Especially this one
Yeah I prefer people to insult me with words they know how to spell.
obviously you don't get it shirt... it has sweet fuck all to do with war.
And if people comment on the work its because they care enough to, if they care about a "crappy drawing" then they should feel free to comment.
I just don't find the "I drew this with MS Paint and a mouse" aesthetic pleasing, no matter how much irony you shovel on.
OMG, this is genius! i love it
I love this.
5$ for the poetic irony
A designer creating a design for other designers portraying the critics who hate his designs - - So Avant-Garde!
p.s. any Matt Giraffe version of Food with Faces will rock your world.
As far as the ms paint goes, I hand draw using uniball eye micros because they have a nice line and wetness about the ink, then i scan, and illustrator it up.
I find it strange that so many people are so staunchly hating of anything that doesn't have perfectly curved lines or solid colours. It really is extremely narrow minded. And quite frankly - this would look shit hot on a tshirt.
So many of you want to bitch and moan about my graphic skill, that's interesting, it's an assumption that i must draw every piece of my work? I bet you didn't even look at the colours in this piece and realise that not only are they suited perfectly to the tshirt colour chosen - but they are also well balanced in the composition as a whole.
Most of my designs have a strong idea behind them. If there was no idea, why say "I get it"
Obviously if there was no idea there'd be nothing to get. Do you alway post comments like this to make yourself feel important?
Oh and if I wanted "just" a reaction I know how to get it. You don't see Jesus giving any gloryhole blowjobs in my profile do you?
^I think I just got an idea for my first sub ...
youd have to be abstract about the penis though, they declined my "you complete me" sub without too much hesitation =P
Wow... just when I thought the whole "I <3 bananaphone / I X bananaphone" couldn't sink lower...
Anyway - constructive - right:
I agree with joshamman that all of the T-shirts look the same. This doesn't seem like it's going to change so, then, the issue to overcome next is the development of the idea on the T-shirt. In reflection even the concepts are pretty much the same. Well, lately, they seem to have more of a meta-level flavor to them (thus making them less marketable). Overall, the earlier ideas/designs were rejected, the thought process hasn't moved forward (it's more inward), and I expect that the number of people willing to even take the time to critique the ideas will diminish. Please do not misconstrue this to mean that you've won anyone over - if anything, you've worn them down. Please look upon ideas for the T-shirts as something to craft. As is, it comes across that the ideas are merely passing thoughts whose implications haven't been deliberated. Furthermore, is it marketable? If the idea is simply to display images, there are non-T-shift forums in which you may develop your gallery.
So, is this meant to be personally attacking bananaphone? No, not really. There are plenty others whose ideas are, at times, lacking the creative juices to stand above the standards of quality that are typical of a threadless shirt. I, however, decided to comment here with bananaphone because it seems that others either leave the hopes of designing or mature their thoughts processes about what it means to design. At this point, bananaphone, I recommend time off to nurture your ideas. Refine them. Craft them. Then, and only then, built them and submit them.
If I am wearing people down and less people like me, then how come more people want to buy these than ever, they are getting the best rankings than ever, and more comments than ever.
Tell me that?
There are alot of people that want to wear these whether uptight people like you like it or not. As for the ideas being the same, no, my last sub was about the types of people that wear berets, and this one is a reflection on Matt Giraffes popularity with alot of irony on top.
Theres been others about Tuna moguls, cornchips, and more.
So back your arguments up with a little SUBSTANCE in future. Thanks.
i like the style a lot. if you differ, move on. why do you have to bash it to the ground with misspelled, lame comments? YOU'RE the ones who should be directing your anger for a more useful purpose.
because cafe press is a lump of shit...
I do have connections with tshirt printers and as soon as i do have the money I WILL be printing my own. I have even made this known to people on threadless. I will start a tshirt company with the name "Torso"
So yes, I have called your bluff. If I had a lazy 3000 dollars sitting around i would start my own tshirt business in all ernesty.
i hate matt giraffe!!!!!
there would be outrage, but it'd sell...
peed on an immigrant...
aw fuck, 5$
Does the one guy's shirt say "Smelled some cheese"?
you are all idiots. Matt Giraffe is genius.
and whoever said that comment about drawing with a mouse obviously has no clue. Most of the designs on this website are drawn with a mouse. Especially the heavily vectored ones that go over so well.
He obviously has a lot of shirts that can be considered to look similar because he has a particular style. He is a focused laser of design, unwavering and ever vigilant in his attempt to bring smart design to the world.
I do like the style, but it needs a concept that compliments it. Some of your other designs do this very well. However, others hit quite wide from the mark and this falls into that catergory. Sorry, but I dont like injokes.
I feel that your style has a much stronger claim to be on Threadless than most other submissions and you don't follow any trends (butterflies, drips, skulls etc) that seem to dominate this site. Shame the same cant be said for some of your harsher critics.
This tshirt isn't an injoke, and would work just as well if noone on earth knew who Matt Giraffe was.
this is awesome. $5
I think it's random enough that it'd be cool, even if people didn't know who he is. And then people will go "who is matt giraffe" and you can make up whatever you like.
Oh he was a general in world war 2, known for his great liking for pickles.
No salsa, you said it as if it was something I wasn't going to do and hadn't considered. So fuck yah.
This is definitely funny...the speech bubbles, the shirts they're wearing, it's comedy. I don't like your style at all, but I'll at least admit that with the right subject matter it could work well and even be something I would buy. I haven't seen anything by you that I would buy yet, but I hope you keep making stuff because it could happen.
I take that back, I would strongly consider buying John West
hah that john west is a silent acheiver, im surprised by how many people have told me theyd like it.
it's ok, I find some of the better comments (such as those asking me to die) quite amusing.
who are you to say I'm not? =) I don't think I'm "really good"
But I don't think 3/4 of the people that criticise me have the slightest clue what they are talking about. Not because they are criticising me, but because they can't do it without being narrow minded twits.
and quite frankly, if you don't get it - then i don't want you wearing my designs.
banana .. I like you as an entity . your personality is good and youre funny .. unfortunatley .. your drawing is lacking .. alot .. I can chalk that up to some desire to be lowbrow / untrained but thats not going to help you that much, as most people here dont really know what that means , and just want something that looks pretty.
and as far as your "im not going to pander statement ".. its a contest if you want to win youre going to have to compromise your work somewhat. if you dont care about winning then thats fine keep doing what you do but dont bitch about teh stuff that wins over yours. cause that just makes you look like a baby bitching that food with faces is more popular that your "Art"
I am not here to win, and I don't bitch at what wins over mine. I bitch about what wins.
And food with faces is a load of shit that panders to morons. I will not take part in it, and I will insult it for my own enjoyment.
you are wasting your time on this site, please print this stuff somewhere else, i really want to buy your shirts! seriously, get them printed somehow!
You called upon me to back up my comments with evidence. I went back and reread my comment, your immediate response, and a number of other posts. Here's what I've learned:
1. The ratings of your submissions may in fact be experiencing an upward trend. Consider me more knowledable now.
2. I perceived that the ideas were all alike, but this is partially because I was looking at them as a collection of similar-looking images. Upon further analysis, it's mostly the meta-level at which I think that your ideas are all incredibly similar. (Hard to fully describe at the moment. I'll think upon it.) On the more concrete level, the ideas do indeed vary, from Matt Giraffe, to berets, and so forth. Thank you for making me probe more deeply at my own critique.
3. Despite good efforts to be respectful and constructive, I received inappropriation condescension and beratement. "Uptight people like you." Antoher example (to joshamman): "I am not going to sell out just to satisfy people like you." I'd like to point out that if the ideas on your T-shirt truly have merit, they would sell better without the amount of steterotyping and berating that you offer in responses to others.
Now I somewhat agree with the following statement that you have made:
"But I don't think 3/4 of the people that criticise me have the slightest clue what they are talking about. Not because they are criticising me, but because they can't do it without being narrow minded twits."
But, in truth, I see the way that you have participated in the conversation as bringing yourself to the level of those 3/4ths of the people. I endeavored to understand where you were coming from, but your response stereotyped and marginalized me just as well as those 3/4ths of the people. Statements that generalize people (ex: "and people like you...") are, in general, short-sighted.
Please look back at my 3 items: the first two were reactions to your response that made me grow as a person and a reviewer of artistic expression; but the 3rd is simply rude to me and to others. Is that a part of the artistic expression that you are wishing to portray? I suspect not, but that is how it seems to come off. If 3/4ths of the people are indeed narrow-minded twits, stooping to their level will challenge them to be better next time; it only helps you to be worse.
Essentially, after I researched your responses to people, you have worn me down. I no longer feel that it is worth my time to comment further on your proposals - ever. Instead of simply asking people to grow their own understandings, you have added statements that are insultory, rude, condescending, prejudicial, lowbrow, or generally uncouth in far too many of the responses to the posts here. Regardless of the nature of the rabble amongst the critics, joining that rabble, as it seems to me that you have, is worthless and demeaning to you both as a person and as an artist. Until such time that I can respect you as a person, I will not respect you as an artist. My apologies, and may you look back upon yourself and grow as a result.
My apologies to be so off-topic and on the meta-level. I just didn't expect to be personally attacked for trying to respectfully share my opinion. Though I may be silent henceforth on bananaphone threads, do not mistakenly equate his having the last word here with having won any heated discussion -- these discussions are not the type to be won or lost.
Tenebrus, are you going to submit that as your final year thesis? Writing an SA about this is probably caring just a little too much.
I never knew saying "people like you" is so offensive, unless of course you are offended by the prospect of being like yourself, which is something I could understand - given that you write SA's in response to stupid things. You were also being uptight, and I said you were uptight, I don't find that stereotyping or any such nonsense - I find that simply an accurate observation on how you were acting at the time.
Have a nice day and oh how I hope one day you respect me rolls eyes
PS. any thing I said that you were insulted by, is off the back of things you ADMITTED you were wrong about. So I am happily justified.
holy crap, thats different =P
does everyone include all the 5 and buys in here?
well i dont know who the fk matt giraffe is and i still think this shirt sucks.
wish i could give a negative score.
hahahaha!!!! Bananaphone, never change. EVER!
I want this shirt more than a fat kid wants a corndog at the fair.
Imagine the looks of confusion you would get with this shirt. GOD I WANT THIS!
You want to talk about my ignorance while condemning the way that other countries say things?
Over here in Australia, essay is SA for short. How can you even dream of calling someone else ignorant, you are clearly one of the biggest douches on here.
And no phallus = no genitals basically. As in no genitals in art or whatever.
Gezzz, is just a t-shit.
Odd look, like it but not enough to buy it...
yeah it's definately no fangbunny.
hey hadaloo, your poetry about jpiatt is truely moving.
bananaphone, ive read most of the comments, and i must say, i love you, int he most un-gay way possible. i like this more and mor everytime, and i think its funny how people get offended by your work, how you totlly berate them, how they get offended by that, adn how you just dont give a shit. i appreciate your contributions to threadless, and definitely print this somewhere else (from all the comments, i dont think thisll do well)
hah well theres been about 40 comments indicating a buy, possibly more, though i know threadless probably print around 1000 or so across the board =P
Maybe one day!
120+ comments. Bananphone wins!
Actually, Matt Giraffe wins.
I was hoping to make 140 but I think it'll be lucky to reach 130, it's really slowed down.
Dude, seriously. Don't always dig your designs as t-shirts, but I always love YOU! (Be you Matt or Phone, or whoever the hell you are. )
Marry you? sheesh, you're willy nilly aren't you.
umm i dont, my favorite comments are from people asking me to die... that makes me defensive how?
I vote 5!
A shirt that causes a stir like this must be good.
It's even a Jesus free stir!
I think the appeal of this shirt, is that it looks like a 6 year old drew it. Just curious, but how much thought and time did you put into this? It does seem that in the way you're defending this, you're definitely proud of this work, and that is to be commended. However, as I could sketch this out in about 5 minutes, and do a 10 times better job, I must give you a 2.
it's not about doing a "better job"
What is better?
theres tons of good illustrators on threadless, they don't need me to be.
the designing thing not working for me? oh right, yeah, cause its actually my job and has been for 9 years =) Yep it's not working for me
There have been plenty of subs with more comments though. I just haven't exploited religeon yet.
Hilarious!!! ok, the places with food are serving lunch soon so i have to go!
