I assume you have deliberately mis-spelt 'fallacy', and apart from the fact that I don't get it, I quite like it.

larsbars on Oct 30 '06
Just a 'revisionist' spelling. I am aware of the clothing line by the same spelling...

Political much?

I totally dig this, though. Very cool.

Great art, i'm oddly attracted to the skeleton. I can see myself wearing despite not being a fan of political statements. I dont kow about the color of shirts you chose, but i cant really think of a better alternative.

the colors look fine to me. Nicely done. I'd rather not have "mission accomplished" on a shirt, though, because I live in Texas and I'd rather not have a concrete message to invite zealots to attack. I'll buy it. I don't think bringing up the "mission accomplished" incident says anything except that there were some fumbles with regard to public relations.

this is awesome. center placement. one little thing - move the text up a little bit in the banner?

I like the illustration, but the banner sucks. I wish the colors were a little less obvious too. I'd get this if it were reworked to be more subtle. Good job though.

Love the illustration, and agree the banner either needs work or drop it all together

So, patt09, it's not as if it's a patriotic shirt. Perhaps many non-Americans are interested in making a statement about the, um, war effort...

plenty of flags have red, white, and blue and stars on them...it isnt actually an american flag....it's just implied.

Each piece of the shirt is some form of cliché. While the attempt is made to juxtapose them for both shock value and aesthetic appeal, I think the shirt fails to rise above its composite elements.

A tally of U.S. war dead: First off, hopelessly ethnocentric. What about the Iraqi dead? Or do they not count? Secondly, I live in DC, and this is a fairly common sight on protest signs.

Mission Accomplished humor: nothing original there, we’ve all heard that joke.

The portrayal of the U.S. as a whore for oil: It’s such a well-known fact that alluding to it doesn’t even make a statement.

A “Hot,” albeit in this case half-dead, woman with a weapon: strange sexual fetish #32 ;-) and it’s on a lot of calendars

The skeleton head dressed in national colors: Once again, been there, seen that.

A shirt should be fresh, original, and exciting—the message inherent in this, and its parts, are dead. It makes an interesting attempt at shock value, which I’m sure some people love. But once the shock wears off, I felt the concepts are so commonplace in today's society - to the point of cliché - and I wasn’t really moved by it.

Ok, In your case this might be preaching to the converted. You are politically aware and you live in this country's political nevrve center. What about all these teen's and 20 somethings who don't necessarily follow current events? Should I be censored because you feel it's cliched subject? However when I look through the design database on threadless I see nothing of the sort. Of course the design is ethnocentric, in a country that is so hopelessly ethnocentric as the US the only way to get the message acrossed is to portray the losses of US soldiers first, then people start thinking about Iraqi casualties and dead...if you come out right with a design that focuses on Iraq's war casualties then people start bitching about our soldiers...So making an assumption that I don't care about the Iraqi suffering is quite naive, of course I do, but you can't hit people over the head with it. Also I wasn't trying to arouse people with a half-dead, hot female holding a gun, quite the opposite. The message I was trying to get across was that of the American Phallacy, that American might is projected on the people and celebrated on a daily basis but in reality is a fragile beast that requires a delicate equilibrium; that everyone is too wrapped up in their own ethnocentricity to even care about the spectre of death and war. The woman is Mistress Death depicted in the mational colors, and the "hot" scantily clad body would be the distraction of pop-music skanks and reality tv shows provides to keep peoples attention form the government's true agenda...Now I appreciate the fact that you feel the design doesn't bring anything new to the table, but don't attack me with your frustration over politics, ethnocentrism, stale designs on threadless, or what ever else is bothering you...

oh wow wait, i just realized, is that supposed to be a year on the banner or 1337 for sadist.

As for being cliche', i kind of want the shirt in black

far_2_far_2_fast on Nov 03 '06
No one's trying to censor you. I just think the shirt's message is overdone. There's a massive difference between me saying I don't like your design, and me saying you shouldn't be allowed to create it. But still, nice rhetoric. :-)

I wasn't attacking you. An attack on you would be, "Larsbars, I think you're an idiot." (Which isn't the case, and isn't something I'd say anyway.) I was commenting on the shirt, which, last time I checked, wasn't you.

Am I not allowed to say that I don't like your design?
larsbars
larsbars on Nov 03 '06
Fair enough, by attacking me I meant my artistic intregrity or lack there of. I realize there is a difference between not liking the design and saying I shouldn't create, however I was refering to the subject matter. Because a subject or design element might be cliched (ie girls with guns, skulls) does that mean they should ne off limits to the designer? Again because similar ideas have been portrayed on protest posters, does not mean that this design is cliched, but I do appreciate your input. Thank you.

but only 4 for the design because i'm not keen on the banner, the point doesn't need to be made that explicit plus its not aesthetically pleasing and i find it ruins the rest of the illustration.

I'm pretty sure he posted that on every comment of his. Like a signature, you know?

I think you could move the font so it's centered in the banner, meaning the distance to top from font and to bottom from font is even. But really good art, anyway.
