are you kidding me? atleast change up the colors if you're going to steal someone else's style. i have a feeling that paint by number is going to replace the heart as over-done and uncreative. i can't wait to see the paint by number heart submissions that will be rolling out soon.

Stolen from where? If you're talking about the gnome sub, I sincerely doubt the idea/color scheme was stolen... they were likely submitted at around the same time and it can take weeks for them to go up.

nice colors and composition.as for the debate about "stolen styles" etc., i think in the case of those 2, ppl can hardly say who was first, and it doesn't matter - the color by numbers is not a "style" it's a gimmick that adds to the concept of the shirt.what matters is what you do with that concept, and whether or not you create a nice illustration - otherwise, it remains only a gimmick.btw i think this shirt will be good for guys too.but then again, i'm not a a guy.

well acutally lemon, i submitted mine on october 12 (and it went up on the 13th) this person submitted theirs today (the 16th), according to their very own blog entry. when one posts a sub for a competition, it goes up the same day or the next day (i subbed mine the 12 and it went up the 13) it takes weeks when submitting for the ongoing competition.

that said i am not implying i invented the paint by number tshirt by any means and i think this is a cool design. but come on, the color schemes are exactly the same. its not a coincidence.

last thing i'll say about this is that 3 days apart is plenty long. this design probably took him/her maybe an hour, two hours tops. i still think this is a great shirt and i'd probably buy it if it got printed, but i also dont believe in coincidences when it comes to the same "gimmick" and the same exact color scheme.

I know that the dates that they go up vary, but I always assumed it took at least a few days.

I'm with pinup on this one. I have little doubt that this sub was created after seeing color gnome. The biggest piece of evidence to me is the nearly identical color scheme. I find it very hard to believe that two different people both came up with the unique idea to create a paint-by-numbers submission with the same color scheme on the same shirt color at the same time. Especially since to my knowledge such a style has not previously been submitted. The mathematical probability is insane. That being said, the paint-by-numbers style (NOT a gimmick, as that is defined as something that is intentionally misleading to trick people) will likely be reproduced in the future as it is novel and very appealing. Following a particular style isn't a problem, rather it's the submissions that steal other's exact design concepts. There is nothing original, creative, or innovative about this design. Sorry to sound like a bitch, but it's true.

i have seen a good amount of color by number subs if i recal correctly, no one came up with the idea on their own. and they're not the same picture, they are completely different images. so who cares. i've used ideas from other people's subs before, maybe not so directly, but it happens. there's not a patent on the color by numbers idea. it's not like they traced your drawing and resubed it. so let the best illustration win i guess, if they even go anywhere at all.

No one's doing anything new under the sun.

Let each design speak for itself.

Unless it's a blatant rip-off (i.e. same subject matter, color schemes, style) then just leave it out.

these are different. sometimes artists come up with the same things at the same time.
the colors are the closest thing going on. color by numbers has been, and will be done again.
and even the colors- when dealing with a 4 color palette and parodying a paint by numbers painting, i imagine most people will come up with thier own versions of red, blue, green and yellow.

Hey he used the same #'s and probably the same program to create them too. I think he probably used a pencil to draw the picture on paper too, so I'm convinced he copied it.
I agree with travis76 get over it. People think alike and if we didn't we wouldn't be so cool.

I love the style. How do all of your subs have such a vastly different style? 5 anyway.

the drawing is original, but I am concerned about the colors being identical and the idea being swiped...not that paint by numbers is anything new, but I really don't think it's cool to reward stealing conepts or ideas....it's the idea/irony that is just as hard as the drawing itself. Ideas aren't necessarily fair game in this forum....

So here is the image that I really wanted to submit, but due to time constraints I had to post what I had.


I have always been drawn to nostalgia in design, and have been wanting to submit a paint by number themed design for quite some time now. I in fact packaged my website : InvisibleElement.comaround the idea of using paint by number last year. Too bad it took me this long to find time, and a decent theme (Science of Sleep) to apply it to.

To be honest, while checking out the blogs, after I submitted I saw pinup-artists gnome submission (nicely executed) for the first time. I knew that it was gonna be interesting from then forward. Of course some people in the threadless community were going to accuse me and or anyone else who ever had the paint by number “gimmick” of being unoriginal and a rip off artist. To say the least, this happened to be a coincidence. Of course you can believe me or continue to call me whatever, but at least have the decency to look at the design itself and judge it by its concept and execution.

Oh, and by the way, be looking for my next pending submission . It also is a paint by number “gimmick”.

well, that "gimmick" word certainly got out of context, and out of hand...it is obvious that the paint by numbers is only a part of the design, among other things. having said that,this design is interesting and looks good. and also the placement on the shirt is great.

I think this design is amazing. I think it is purely a coincidence that there are a few paint by number submissions out there right now. my only complaint is that i would want to design to be centered. But i would still buy it.

I hope this comment finds you well. I was perusing your design when I couldn't help but notice that you blatantly ripped off someone else's color scheme. This is complete crap because, and lets be reasonable here, the eye dropper tool is supposed to be used for good, and not evil. I wish I could look at the design to judge it, but I cannot see past the wall of tears that covers my eyes when I see designers just hacked up like that. For shame, man, for shame.

Uhg, this is so cliched. Color by numbers is so gimmicky, and cliche. I mean the fact that you used colors in general, is so cliche. But, why stop there? Lines are so yesterday. And shapes for that matter. Screw it, tee shirts are more than cliched, infact, why doesn't threadless move into the now, and make like mouse pads or something. Blah. Just be glad you didn't use any extensive type. Fonts are a thing of the past my friend. So, so cliched.

Everyone should stop freaking out. The color scheme is similar, but this is a better design than the Color Gnome, no offense. And Paint by Slumber has a wittier title. We all know that we really only judge based on the level of wittiness of the title.

LMA-OH people suck sometimes. acutally, i like this one much better.... i can see this being worn by guys alot more than the other one... the other one was just abit tooo cutesy, and it doesn't help that the example shirt they inserted looks like its made for a chick w/ the curved sides and all.... im not bashing anybody.. i just prefer this one more, style- and design-wise...
