About my design

by classicoke
i like japanish designs so decided to do one. been done a million times? yes! i like making two designs-in-one so you dont get bored with the tee as quickly. the big thing is a madeup character that probably would mean \"black cross\". the top text reads \"authorisation to cut\", and is an old Japanese expression dating back to the feudal era. Samurai had the right to strike at anyone of a lower class who was compromising their honour. This expression would name the samurai\'s blow, meaning either \"sorry to kill you\", or \"I am sorry to kill but I have the right\".

The expression is still sometimes used in modern day as \"I apologize in advance for this one\" for the subtle humor in offering what amounts to a unsympathetic apology.

the Verdana link led to a big whiner,

though I did like the line,

"I'm sick of Tom Cruise being the Last Samurai."

I'm not into glorifying a right someone had

to kill anyone of a lower class who was

compromising their honour. The design

makes it look like the strike can be a death

strike which makes it impossible for me

to get excited about.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 24 '06
mkay i can understand that but this was not intended as a glorification of the old days. i was inspired by the fact that japanese people still use this expression today as a warning of coming hurt, not death.

I'm not a huge fan of Japanese shirts, but I love languages, so I thought your explanation of the design was really interesting.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 25 '06
yea, thats what inspired me. i was really into old japanese culture and history when i was younger, specially the age of the warring states. couple of days ago a friend and i was talking about warfare, modern vs "the good old times". I tried to explain a little about the samurai attitude towards life and death, but i couldnt remember what this practice was called so i looked it up and immidiately thought, "they still use this expression! i could make something out of this"

i love this shirt, except for the fact that "the big thing is a madeup character", i wish you had used a real character for the middle

I agree with haosome, and I love how often you respond. It's a mixture of the red sun in "I Sunk Your Battleship" (I think that's what it was called) and a way cooler version of the samurai shirt "Bleeding Sun Remix." I like the fact that the japanese isn't just crap - it's actually something someone in japan might appreciate. I give it a 5$. And, in the spirit of haosome, HAWT dayumn, I'd buy!

thanks =) and in response to the made-up character: i took the symbol for cross (which is just a cross) and put it on top of the symbol for black so it isnt exactly a made up one =) it should mean something

I don't like the big black character in a square. But everthing else is cool. I like the ninjaguy, too bad it looks like he's chopping up some girl.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 27 '06
yea i knew some people would say that but with out it it would just look like random sun-jap-design i think.
JAYGATZ
JAYGATZ on Aug 27 '06
I love everything except the slashing. I do wear shirts around kids and grandparents. I really hope that is not a girl he's killing. If you could just take out that character and leave the samurai without a victim, I'd give this a total $5.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 28 '06
its not a girl... but if it was, why would that make a difference? shit happened, still does. a cartoony japanese divebomber is better?
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 28 '06
i all wanted to do was to design a "real" japanese shirt, not just random flashy crap without content. and no, its not about the thrill of the kill. the samurai were a cool bunch and this design was actually (well, in part) meant to shed light on an "uncool" thing they did, a reminder of a more brutal day and age.

kill bill? my god that movie was oh so many minutes of total bullshit. if i was a director i would care about my reputation more and not just film whatever shitfaced samurai fantasy id like to see realised. its more of a kagemusa design, wouldnt you say =)

"in response to the made-up character: i took the symbol for cross (which is just a cross) and put it on top of the symbol for black so it isnt exactly a made up one =) it should mean something" Emphasis mine.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. For all I know, that actually could be a character, but if you don't know what it means (if anything!), should it really be the focus of your shirt? There are plenty of real characters in the language that might at least have something to do with the design's intent.

Also, unless the Japanese character is substantially different from the Chinese one, the radical for 'black' is written incorrectly.

Not meant to offend, I'd just never wear a shirt with nonsense on it.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 29 '06
but you would wear one with an animal standing in coffe? isnt that nonsense? no, because its art. art is not about the level of nonsense or correctness, right? i plainly wrote that i didnt know what it meant, it was an artistic interpretation. art.
parabolic
parabolic on Aug 29 '06
You have a good point that that design of mine is indeed nonsense! I didn't word my thoughts correctly.

What I meant is that if language is going to be used on a shirt, it should be used in its correct form. Many times, Chinese/Japanese characters (not symbols, there's a difference) are used in shirts and elsewhere just because they 'look cool', rather than because they add to the meaning of the design. That's the sort of nonsense I was referring to, that the character isn't real and so is just there to give an 'Asian feel' to the shirt. It's akin to someone trying to put English on a shirt having only a vague idea of what Roman letters look like, so they make them up.

There is a certain art to the main character in this design, definitely, and you've drawn it well. But it looks like it means something when it actually doesn't... that's what gets to me, it's only my opinion.

Anyway, thanks for answering my comment. :) Also, I just realized that I didn't say above that besides the incorrect character(s?), I do like the design, and the meaning you were going for with the phrase 'authorization to cut.'
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 29 '06
i hear ya. i couldnt mess with the actual title of the designs japanese characters, of course... and unless wikipedia is incorrect, then neither am i. but as a designer i felt that i wanted to do more. like, "fine, now ive copied and pasted these characters, how about i try designing my own.. it might add to the overall feel" i thought that if i gave the look of my artistic interpretation the opposite of that of the real characters, people would be able to tell the difference, but im not stupid, you have a totally valid point. it looks kinda real and i can totally understand how that can be annoying. however, id rather wear a creative design (not boasting, it really wasnt that creative=) rather than just the random sun with random cool samurai posing with a sword.
classicoke
   classicoke on Aug 29 '06
...what im trying to say is, probably, that i wanted to give it a personal touch, something you would never see in anyone elses design, something unique. i will admit that maybe that was a bad idea, or a badly executed idea.
theXmushroomXman
theXmushroomXman on Aug 29 '06
yeah! i love this shirt! i would totally buy that!
parabolic
parabolic on Aug 29 '06
Not a bad idea! The style of the character is awesome as-is, and that style adds a personal touch all its own I think. I do agree that it looks much better with your character there than it would look if it were just the sun and the people. Again, great design, I just got hung up on language. :)
