About my design
by mrfaux
Those little bathroom people have always bothered me. It seems to me most women don\'t wear dresses, especially with any regularity and some guys like me wear kilts which are rather skirty. It must be tough symbolizing gender norms on all those doors. I wonder if they ever get bored and decide to switch around. If they did, this is what it might look like.

Please be nice, it\'s my first sub.

oddly enough, i don't really like it on the orange or the green. i think the idea to give the pink one some cleavage might also be good.

I think I'd like it best on a dark neutral color, like dark faded gray. And I'd kind of like to see what would happen if there was one small line of cleavage, but I'm not sure it's entirely necessary...

I wear dresses all the time, darling. But, you know.

Love the way the dress is drawn- the blue tee, not so much. Looks unsure. 4

It doesn't look like they're switching, it just looks like they just had sex.
Or is that just me?
If the pink one had actual boobage, it might be different.

I like it and I think the actual design is sweet, but I would feel kind of awkward if I met a somebody who was a cross dresser, like I was making fun of them or something, you know? thats why I wouldnt wear it.

yes! i was just complaining about stereotypical gender rolls today... I totally love the concept, and I'll gladly explain to anyone if/when I get to wear this. $5

Climbbamboo,
Don't feel bad. I'm totally a crossdresser. Although I can't speak for crossdressers all around the world all the crossdressers/trans people/gender deviants I know freakin' hate those bathroom signs, so I don't think they'd be offended. I think they'd think it is awesome.

Killer bunnies
With the looking like they just had sex, I didn't think of it in my original sketch but I realized it was there later on and didn't feel I really had to change it because I'm a fan of ambiguity. I generally like to think about the bathroom symbols getting up to mischief and whether that means breaking away from their sad symbolic lives in the form of crossdressing or in the form of a quickie and then they get confused whose clothes belong to whom, it doesn't bother me.

To all discussing cleavage,
I will think about it. I guess it would clarify or be good for a laugh, but honestly, I don't believe under that dress the woman symbol has any breasts at all.

ok so how do you suggest we mark bathrooms, since you hate the current method so much?
nanascho3
nanascho3 on Aug 01 '06
Concept is spot on, but something doesn't seem right. I think that there may be too much detail in the shirt that she's grabbing and that their proportions are a bit off (in terms of body length and apendage [arms, legs] width) Shorten it up, eliminate uncessary details, and you've got a great design here. Cheers! 4.

I think the addition of cleavage would just be upsetting. I'm not sure why.
But I love love love it.
nanascho3
nanascho3 on Aug 01 '06
And stop all this nonsense with clevage talk--adding that would be too much detail in what is supposed to be a simple design. The difference between boy and girl here is designated by easily recognizable and inarguable means--color. Since we've all been born has blue not been the color of choice for expected parents of boys and pink for girls? Granted, you could make an argument on society for setting such standards, but then if that's the case, you have WAY too much free time on your hands. Like I said in my first comment, simplify the design...and perhaps "lighten" the colors up a bit to an almost pastel if it's really even all that necessary. Still a 4 in my book. Nice to see that thise design in getting so much feedback.

pictoral symbols are used so that people who can't read or can't read english can tell what is behind the door. i was wondering how you would do that without using a person with a skirt for women's bathroom and pants for a mens bathroom.
mrfaux
mrfaux on Aug 01 '06
I dislike gendered bathrooms because I look gender ambiguous (even when I try not to) and if people open the door without the skirt and see me they are cross and if people open the door with the skirt and see me they are cross. I am not alone in this regard. You have no idea the number of people who get bladder infections because using public gendered restrooms puts them at risk for harassment. Therefore I advocate nongendered bathrooms. If they want to be more descriptive there could be a picture of a toilet and a picture of a urinal, then you would have a clear idea of what is behind the door.

how do you see it fitting the theme?
mrfaux
mrfaux on Aug 01 '06
Honestly the work wasn't exactly inspired by the theme but because it has to do with symbols of what "normal" gender should be and those symbols in my opinion don't reflect reality and my design is spinning the ideas of "normal" I thought I could submit it under the theme. Afterall, if you submit to hearts threadless you still get to be in the regular competition.

Great idea!

In China, the signs are played around in non-public (meaning airports, etc) places. The women's sign got switched to a picture of a high heeled shoe and the men's is changed to a pipe. Another stereotype?

This is awesome. The issue of labeling bathrooms at my college is a hot issue right now. Speaking as part of the genderqueer/trannie community, undesignated bathrooms take a lot of stress out of my life (though there are librarians on my campus who blantently disagree and don't feel safe peeing during work). All bathrooms need is a sign pointing out whether or not they hold urinals.

Thinking the signs just had a quicky is pretty effin awesome as well :) $5 $5 $5 $5 $5

Nice design, I saw this idea as a short animation a few years back. I like the idea but I find the colours ooud and flashy. Baby pink and pink would be better or just drop the drop and stick to the concept.

Decent idea and message. There's a problem, though: Those bathroom people are completely indistinguishable without their clothes, so it's hard to tell that anything's awry. The only way to distinguish them is to enforce some gender stereotype about clothing or color preference. (And really, it's bound to come down to that since there's no 100% universal or infallible way of distinguishing gender, without, well, explicit depictions of genitalia--- and even then there can still be ambiguous cases).

So I guess my main point is that it's difficult to tell that they're cross-dressing, and so the message doesn't quite get across. I didn't notice the colors until after I'd read your description, and still might not have made the connection if I had. Not to mention that the use of pink and blue to distinguish gender seems to me to somewhat. contradict your message about gender stereotypes. But, the message is certainly interesting, and other folks seemed to get it okay; so it may yet do well. If not, a little refinement could certainly change that. good luck.

clarebearvaughan on Aug 03 '06
i love this idea, those signs always just make me want to laugh...is that really how anyone thinks of human beings? they are so sad looking! i like the way your design shows the fluidity of the concepts of gender and 'normal'. i agree with the comment that the dude's left arm is a bit long. also, on the whole cleavage debate: although it's definitely true that not all women have cleavage, i do think it might clarify what is going on a bit, which would be worth it because most people only see a shirt for a few seconds, and personally, i think the more people that can 'get it' and start (or continue) to question gender categories, the better. but maybe i just like cleavage...
anyway, this is my new favorite shirt, i would buy like three. awesome design and concept. 5$.
mrfaux
mrfaux on Aug 04 '06
whoa! you are right about the arm! it used to be inside a frame (like bathroom signs are) and it broke up the arm making it appear shorter but now it is free to go about its gigantic business, it could use a lil shortening. too bad there isn't an "I'd buy like three" box like the "I'd buy it" box.
fatheed
   fatheed on Aug 04 '06
Good idea, but to the trained and pedantic eye, the arms on both figures vary in length and width. That aside, it is a cool design - I would probably prefer it in cooler colours. But colour preference is subjective and that is just me. So there.
mrfaux
mrfaux on Aug 04 '06
Actually, the arm widths on each figure should be identical because I made a more or less scale drawing of a bathroom sign and constructed one armish shape and duplicated it to make the two arms on each figure. Though I see now that the shouldery bit on the pink one could do with improvement.

Yeah. American apparel is good because it is sweat free but really bad because their largest size is like a normal size 12 for women or something.
Fwuzzle
Fwuzzle on Aug 05 '06
No cleavage.
Love the shirt.

Need to express the different genders with out dated traditions because otherwise it'd be too confusing, and it would require some sort of..body part identification on the door, to be politically correct(Blue v. Pink, would be seen as sexist, or something). I'm sure they would have fixed it long ago otherwise..

Uh...yeah. $5

I know tons of people have commented already - but I really do love this design, and had to check back in to see the overall score. I love the concept and the creativity. It's simple and eye-catching. Though it does take a moment to figure out what's going on (that they're switching clothes, for whatever reason you may imagine) but I think that's the beauty of it. With the pink and blue colors - it is very clear who's who, and if it is unclear - I think that is a comment on the gender signs themselves - that they aren't truly representative of the respective genders. (By the way - loved your idea that the signs should be a toilet and urinal. Genius. One could even throw in a bidet for those of the French-persuasion.)

I really hope they decide to print this one. I love the dark grey color the design is shown on. I'd definately buy it. $5
