I think this one is the closest to a real "outsider art" feel I've created to date -- and the Bananaphone comparisons are fair I think as he has promoted a similar style here for a long time...

With pieces like this I'm really striving to get closer to the poetry/art hybrid concept - originally it sprung out from some folk art works I was looking into and it's heavily influenced by artists out there in this realm such as Dubuffet, Wolfli, and to some extent Kelly D. Williams...

It does bear a resemblance to bananaphone's designs, but it's also very different. It's more refined than his work, this doesn't look scribbly or haphazard... it looks like you really put a lot of thought into it and the detail is wonderful.

The text is also very nice, it's not senseless babble... it's enjoyable to read and does a great job at conveying the message you're trying to get across. 5 for effort... plus it's just so pleasing to look at. I dig the curvy lines.

i like the style, but i just cant give you a decent score because you totally ripped of bananaphone. even if a few more people think its better executed i think its crap to just blatantly steal his design layout. and i like his better

i agree with bree, in a little more grouchy/confrontational way. insofar as this resembles bananaphones work at all, it's because both bananaphone and basicShift are working within a shared context that has decades'-old roots. that's not a "ripoff", it's working with a sub-genre (or whatever you want to call it).

i like this a lot, too. i wonder why you've chosen to use so little contrast between the colors and the shirt background? it seems like a pretty strong poem/comment, not at all the quiet message that i'd expect to associate with this palette. i think higher contrast is really nice to accentuate this sort of nice drawing. i hope you'd think of that change if you were considered for a print.

Steve -- thanks for the comment, I think you tied up what I was trying to say earlier nicely... nothing new under the sun here...

In creating the work I felt the message was strong -- and maybe didn't see the need to "broadcast" it as loudly maybe. I also really felt I wanted to connect to the idea of "inner strength" a quieter force that enables so many people to live their lives happily as they appreciate what they have, and not what they are missing -- I think ultimately that's the concept that brought about the colors. I imagine someone seeing it softly and wanting to explore it more, or someone buying it knowing that it conveys a message they love but arent interested in having it read from afar.

Freaky but nice. Not something I'd wear, but it is interesting. A bit hard to read, needs to have a smidge more contrast.

Wow, theres some really stupid comments on this sub. Some people need to quit pretending like they know all there is to know about art just because they've lurked on Threadless for a year. Bananaphone has yet to invent anything new, nor have I, or pretty much anyone else on this sit. This is quite different then anything of Bananaphones, though they do share similar attributes, its no different then comparing a d3d sub to a Glennz sub. Get over yourselves

Now that I've said that. I have to say I really like the direction you have taken recently Basic, this is quality stuff. I really love the design and colors on this one. I'm totally giving this a pelvicly thrusted $5!

well, I guess Im not the only one to see the similarity to Bananaphone's stuff. But, I like this shirt. I think it's cute, wearable, and the colors are fanatastic. I personally wouldn't wear it, the movie isn't my cup of tea, but nonetheless, good job!
