"the far side?

I was honestly unaware of any similar concept in a Far Side cartoon so it was not the source of inspiration. Purely coincidence.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

It's hard to tell that a human is entering
the vehicle. He has grey skin (same as
shirt color) and is a very small part of
the design.

If the design's theme is about switching
humans and crash test dummies, then
I think the design would be improved by
showing the human is in some sort of danger
( show a crash wall or obstacle or whatever
your imagination brings about).

this makes me think of the song by crash test dummies in which the chorus is merely: "mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm". still a good design.

pretty. the graphic is really well done. what is the concept though?

velcroŽ sideburns on Jul 11 '06
"pretty. the graphic is really well done. what is the concept though?"

Thank ya. : )

hmmm yeah, I guess I didn't really explain that...

Basically the concept is the obvious role reversal of humans and crash test dummies. The title is meant to be an ambiguous reference to both the crash test dummies behaving as humans and the humans being just plain idiotic by willingly particpating, therefore crash test "dummies" as well.

And as far as my "new trend" it would be the graphic style being that it's a two-point perspective and rendered in somewhat of an architectural manner. Not sure if that's anything really new in the realm of t-shirt design persay but I haven't come across much of that on here personally.

Hope that clears things up.

velcro® sideburns
velcroŽ sideburns on Jul 24 '06
Thanks, but the whole "far side" thing has been brought up and I had honestly never heard of it prior to that so therefore it's a moot point. If you are referring to something different I'd like to know what it is.
Kojima
   Kojima on Jul 24 '06
Come on. Let's stop the fighting. Agreed?
velcro® sideburns
velcroŽ sideburns on Jul 24 '06
Sounds good to me. My intention was never to start one with you but instead just to provide some perspective to others on your design. Standing alone it's not a bad shirt at all (obviously, if they decided to print it) but initially it irked me to see something so similar to iso50, but I realize now it's not that big of a deal.
Kojima
   Kojima on Jul 25 '06
Why didn't you say anything about the blatant-ness (I do not dare say the word) of this? It was printed today as well?
Kojima
   Kojima on Jul 26 '06
This is the Far Side idea that is similar to yours .

I will not say that you ripped it, then go on the blog forums and post 10 times about it (like you have with my design). Sometimes, designers have the same ideas. I think that's fine.

The only time it's bad is when you print screen and image and submit it as is.
velcro® sideburns
velcroŽ sideburns on Jul 26 '06
^^ Yes, I looked it up after that one girl originally brought it to my attention on here. It is similar but to me the concepts are completely different between the two: the cartoon appears to be more in the vein of a horror movie parody where the crash test dummies are portrayed in the role of villain and are forcing the humans into their role making them unwilling victims. My concept, on the other hand, is intended to be a surreal role reversal where the characters involved are behaving as though what is happening is "normal" (come to think of it now, I should have saved this for the little miss sunshine contest!.....oh well :/). The humans are willing participates as if this was their intended role, and the "crash test dummies" are behaving like humans would...just a snapshot of another mundane day at the crash test facility. : )

"Why didn't you say anything about the blatant-ness (I do not dare say the word) of this? It was printed today as well?"

The main reason is it's quite obvious to most where the inspiriation came from --- there's no disputing it in this case.

And you are actually right though, I shouldn't have used the term "rip-off" in my original comment in the blog because that implies to most that you directly copied something ( I later made a point of clarifying that just to be fair).

I agree that there is nothing wrong with having similar concepts as it's an extremely difficult task to come upsomething that is truly original -- it's more about how the concept is portrayed and individual style.

This is where I initally objected to seeing your design, because it reminded me so much of what Scott Hanson has developed as his signature style and my immediate reaction is that the designer probably had done it on purpose and gotten away with it. Because if this was the case, what made it winning design had alot to do with someone else's ideas of style.

But I can see now that I get the sense this wasn't the case and it very likely was not intentional at all, just coincidence and in that case more power to you. Congrats on the winning design.
