You've really put up some time on this one, but it's not that you would be somekind of a famous streetartist yourself now is it? Alot of the customary stuff there, but nothing that would get my attention really.

I don't really understand why people should need to boost up their city culture credibility with a shirt like this. The cops are all at you! ISN'T THAT COOL OR WHA!=!?

'This design would be great for when you\'re tagging and the cops drive by- just cling to the wall and you\'ll disappear...'

Oh, not.

I think it's just a stupid idea to get a shirt desperately sold on Threadless by appealing on street culture, of which many want to 'belong' to.

But nevertheless, you have a good design even though I wouldn't wear it.
travis76
   travis76 on Jul 07 '06

Deusm:

i'm dizzy..wha?

" Alot of the customary stuff there"
1)kinda the point.

"'This design would be great for when you\'re tagging and the cops drive by- just cling to the wall and you\'ll disappear...'
Oh, not"
2)stupid jokes aren't meant to be taken literally.

"I think it's just a stupid idea to get a shirt desperately sold on Threadless by appealing on street culture, of which many want to 'belong' to."
3) desperately? -the main idea is to combine as many of my favorite things into on design as i could... the way i saw fit to do that was the layering of street art. i'm not trying to get the street art kids- per se, but i hope to include at least one element everyone likes, not by cunning, but by nature.

"But nevertheless, you have a good design even though I wouldn't wear it."
4) thanks, i think?
that's like saying 'i hate everything this represents, you're obviously a wanna be, but I like your design'.

as an outsider and someone who is the farthest thing from 'street' as myself, i'm merely honoring the random nature of months and layers of anonymous street art, and the process as a whole.

i'm not asking for your cred.

I don't know if anyone else who's been hanging around threadless for far too long (like myself) gets really excited when under-printed designers put out a sure thing - but I know I do. Deusm on Jul 07 '06
'Stupid jokes aren't meant to be taken literally.'

Maybe my response didn't mean that I took it totally into heart, or do I have to put these ':D' things all over so you people get the point and the fact that maybe I didn't take it so literally after all? Ehh.

And oh yeah, forget about the streetkids who are doing that stuff for real, I just thought that you were a random wannabe. I've seen too much of those idiots at random forums where they come saying that now they've tasted the real streelife by tagging into a wall and got polices attention more than once HEY. Nevertheless, I loathe those idiots really bad. Just thought that you would be something like that at first, with your streety design which has everything from cophating to leftwing propaganda. My bad, I was at very frustrating mood when I came back home anyway, so I hope you'll forgive me.

'that's like saying 'i hate everything this represents, you're obviously a wanna be, but I like your design'.'

I don't hate everything it represents, I just hate people who try to be something by living trough the street culture without doing really nothing. A cool shirt could do it aye? It seems that I was wrong, even though there's people like that.

YOU KNOW THOSE DAMN TAGGING KIDSS!! :d

whatever.

'i'm not asking for your cred.'

Well you had it allready.

'Deusm, your a fucking ass.'

You know there's nothing wrong with threadless, nor travis, but some random ass who comes and has no understanding from anything that has been said is really a fucking laugh.

I love street art and this design definitely teeters between the boundaries of tribute and appropriation. Since winning would mean this collage of rehashed symbols would now have a price rather than be free for all public consumption, I'll go with the latter.

my shirt has drips, hearts, skulls, animals, internet cliches, lusters of random things, pop culture parody, AND angles.
all the no-no's..but hopefully, better when combined.

appropriation?
most street art is appropriation.
there are so many preston fairey and banksy rip offs out there, it's ridiculous.

this isn't just about street art. this is about the coming together of things from many people on one surface. missing cat posters and musician wanted flyers aren't street art, but they are all what happens to a surface in the city.
travis76
   travis76 on Jul 08 '06
as far as putting up a manipulated 'bob' head being appropriation, i'm actually a member of the chuch of the subgenius (alias: Pastor Bedtime) and am encouraged to spread the word.
Lwalsh5235
Lwalsh5235 on Jul 08 '06
great idea, the layering of street art is can be really interesting and beautiful but this design doesn't completely capture it... probably because of the color limitations- everything just ends up looking the same and not like a diverse range of posters/stickers/graffiti

amble on Jul 08 '06
Most street art is appropriation, but unsold appropriation. The way it's looking, you will attain two thousand dollars and Threadless far more, essentially profiteering from images that are near-copies of or inspired by existing free art. The flyers and non-street art (I didn't notice, really, before) do give your design more credibility as an homage to city life. However, I just want to let you know I never intended to say what your intentions were with this design, just state what I thought might be arising moral issues that come about because of the creation and subsequent win of your design.

(p.s.:
Not a big fan of Banksy because the whole shroud of mystery concerning his identity seems so gimmicky, especially when he's doing work for corporations and galleries, not to mention album covers, and apparently has a manager.)

This to me is more Volcom street art, where you have used a collection of clip art, brand symbols and generic design elements. Which as you say is part of the point. I dunno, it dont look like any street art that I have seen, which generally is more drawings of a more random nature. This is more brand poster/sticker advertising, or kinda similar to a collection of house industry icons. Perhaps this is what the streets look like where you live?

I also tend to think the composition could have been more random, and less geometric, you have random elements, but I think you could have played with the placement of those elements and made it less "boxy".

Still, with all the buzz around this, perhaps a winner.

I love how this shirt is a blatant rip off of famous street artists by Banksy and Frank Shepard Faire and other artitist. Good job supporting unoriginal work threadless!

ha ha hilarious.
you know street artists but you don't know what parody and homage are, do you?- even though 90% of street art is parody or manipulation.

of course 'obi' is homage to 'obey' dipshit.

and tell me what's so banksy? stencil work?
better go sue every kid that ever sprayed a stencil before and after the great fucking banksy. i didn't even know about banksy until someone on this site told me about him.

this shirt is also such a ripoff of mcdonald's, everyone that ever lost a cat, every punk band flyer, anyone that ever picked up a fat marker, the hello my name is sticker corporation...

jeezus man. get a clue,

Love the whole design, not a huge fan of the color - not dark enough. But...ahhh I'll buy it anyways, hah.
