For a shirt that's anti-war, it seems to be really revelling in the imagery of war. Also, while you'll surely find great support with those against the Crusades, the War on Terror, and Vietnam, you are going to meet some obstacles in criticizing WW1and2, although I'm sure you've been quite intentional in including them.

nice typography, great layers, but i agree that the message is a bit lost due to all the cool images of planes and guns and stuff.

pwaulie on Jul 05 '06
the idea here is "WAR IS GOOD" then the typography does its own implicit ellipses with (for absolutely nothing)

so you want peopel drawn in by the gun, images, distortion, etc, then when they actually read the main text, and the absolutely nothing...whammo.

at least thats what hit me about it. i couldnt do better ona design, and the text is fine, since you obviously dont want people to strain too hard to read it. 3 or 4.

PLEASE READ!

I hope the thready dudes sort out this missing initial comments bug soon!

This is influenced from the Edwin Starr 'War' tune, I've designed this in the style of the Octavo/8VO design group who hand rendered layouts like this in the pre-Mac days. The draw in is the line 'War Is Good' but then the line 'absolutely nothing' is the footnote, the images are there because they can glorify war but also highlight their use as instruments of war.

pwaulie I think has got it & scrunchie.

very good - and i'd say that WWI and WWII were bad, very bad - they may have been necessary, but it would still have been better if we'd had no violent conflict killing millions... so no problem with the message.

no-one wins the war, it's just one side doesn't lose.

but this shirt is teh win.

nicely done. the concept is meaningful and clear. however, i think the placement is a little odd. i feel it should be directly below where you show it. but its still a 5. =]

beautiful. love the design. hate the anti war nonsense though. time to grow up flower children. there are bad people out there that wont sit down and talk about it.

Nice sentiment but surely the French Revolution was err... a Revolution?

I agree with the various comments refering to the juxtaposing of these conflicts... motives, mechanics, and the very essence of these seems pretty hard to compare, even if you consider them all conflicts where someone was opposing someone else. The Boer War doesn't seem to relate to the Russian Revolution nor to the Roman Campaigns. Some are conflicts of people standing up against oppressors, some conquerors, half of them didn't have apache helicoptors or uzis... Maybe im just confused. Plus I hate that song.

"for absolutely nothing" should be stronger visually and conceptually. I think that within the parameters of what you're trying to say that a typeface with a more manual flair would be appropriate. Maybe just an italic would work.

That solid shape around "good" is very interesting visually, I think you could work more solid stretches of color in there with some fantastic grainy and unpleasant imagery as negative space within to really punch that concept home.

Interesting stuff, and I always respect type based designs in a sea of typophobes. I would say just think more about what you're trying to say and focus more of (ideally all) the elements to strengthening that idea.

i agree with the message but when it says "war is good", you dont automatically see the "for absolutely nothing".

its misleading

I agree with those that said it's too complicated. maybe as a work of art this can stand up with its layers of messaging...as a shirt, it just takes too much effort to make its point.

I really like it, but the "for absolutely nothing" part is a little small compared to "War is good," which confused me at first until I saw the second half.

Really nice job, though.
elaffint
elaffint on Jul 06 '06
To me, the point of the shirt is unclear not because of the size or placement of the "for absolutely nothing" but because the "wars" listed do include many that were important, and some that were relatively inconsequential... The hundred years' war and the spanish civil war were, historically, quite consequential... And without worrying about whether the French Rev. was a war, it was clearly pivotal... However, the Falklands, maybe not so much.

So I don't know if this shirt is serious (war is good for nothing) or tongue-in-cheek (only an idiot would think war is good for nothing).

I didn't know a war could be inconsequential. Ask the Falkland islanders when the Argentinian army dropped in for coffee how inconsequential that conflict was.

The issue with the text is, you read the 'War Is Good' & the shirt seems to glorify war, but then on closer reading, 'for absolutely nothing' appears underlined by the rows of grave crosses, & the design takes a different view.

C20Percent on Jul 06 '06

'Do you even care that this shirt is bullshit? What do you know about the Chechen War?'

You're right, maybe so, but I know a bit about some wars, my uncle has been sent to Northern Ireland & Bosnia on active service in his Army career, which is thankfully now over, & left his will with our family both times... so I'm not totally unqualified.

AWESOME. You should read The Best War Ever. I forget who wrote it, but it's all about why WW2 wasn't as great as people think and how no war is ever good. $5

Cool idea.. but needs some refinement. Doesn't really make war look bad at all, if you had some soldier holding up a flag on a moutnain of dead bodies.. that'd be gruesome, but would probably better convey that war is bad. Aside from critiques on the symbolism, nice type work and design.

i would never wear this. you'd look like a supporter of war. no one is going to read anything but "war" and "good" as you're walking down the street. it just doesn't make any sense. not to mention that one of the conditions of the competition is "no skulls." i don't get what you want the new trend to be. It still looks like one of those random splattering/collages of words and objects tees.
