I tried the beret, it didn't look right even though it's a mime classic. Once I was in Paris with my family, and it turned out that the French don't wear berets, only silly American tourists (mon pere). This made me think the whole beret thing was made up so the French can easily distinguish friend from tourist (as if being lost with a camera and saying "bawn joor" isn't enough).
