I do recognize a lot of those designs from old copyright-free 19th century woodcuts, which I often use as well. We probably used the same phonographs. But my dj man, I drew myself.
Still, this is awkward. I'm having a Vanilla Ice moment.

It is VERY similar to MarriedToTheSea. I know the art is copyright free, but still...that doesn't mean you should use it as your own :-\

However, there is what some consider to be a valid form of design known as collage (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collage), which I did employ partially in this design, as did the creator of the Marriedtothesea design.

Not to kick a dead horse, but I hadn't ever heard of that site or seen that image before I read these comments. I appreciate all your criticisms, good and bad. I just wish we could move on from the "This must be copied from..." critique.

If there is one thing all designers will learn the hard way, it's that nothing is original. There are millions of people in the world (and the web). Someone's probably inadvertently copying you right now.

So, please, if we could, and if I swear on the health of my beloved dog that I did not rip off marriedtothesea.com, start judging some other aspect of the design?

Oh, and I'm in complete agreement that I should have put the text in the design.
I usually try to avoid using text on t-shirts but, in this case, it probably would have added a lot.

To those kvetching about married by the sea... there are a lot of common images of old woodcuts, the chances of one being used twice are pretty good. Plus most of the image is original illustration anyway.

god, everyone is crybaby central on this comment string. has she not said that the phonograph images are general ones that no one owns and that she made the man part herself? it's not like married to the sea created this exact shirt. they had similar ideas which is essentially what 90% of the shirts on this site are. people seriously suck. Rrrrrrg. Stop with the married to the sea crap! That phonograph image is a century old or older! Married to the sea didn't draw it, nor did they draw that man, which the creator did.
