grayehound on Jun 28 '06 Weird how my initial comment was left off. So this was based on an old urban legend. Victorian views on death and funerals were a bit different than ours. There was a common fear of being buried alive, to the point that there were many patented coffin designs that included warning bells and escape hatches. So the legend is that Poe, long fascinated and terrified by death, was himself buried alive. Only this, and nothing more.

haha that is awsome!! and just cause someone mentioned the term "dead ringer" and the bell you have there: at one time we started to run out of room to bury the dead, so people would unearth old coffins to make room for new--when opening these coffins scratch marks were found on the inside of some and they realized they were burying people alive (how that happened it another story). So, bells were placed beside burials with a string running down to inside the coffin. so, if someone woke up they could pull the string hence the term "dead ringer" though that is only one theory of the terms origin.

It took me about a minute to actually notice the skull. That's the secret here. It looks good from a distance, then it looks wicked up close...THEN you notice the skull. Or perhaps the other way round.... I'd buy it. 5.

i love this shirt and i hope it gets reprinted...but the dates are so wrong...edgar allan poe was born in 1809 and DIED in 1849...
