really neat, but I don't really like how the deer in the back have no detail, and I think I'd prefer it without them there. 4

craziness. crazy coolness. agree that the deer in back need detail, don't agree that deer in back should disappear

What's he floating on? Is that a refrigerator?
Andysloth
Andysloth on Jun 22 '06
It looks like a fridge to me too. I think it's a wicked design, very well done! I love the colors. It's funny but also represents creatures that rely on ice and how they're losing their it.

There's an old joke about a great salesman can sell a refrigerator to an eskimo. Guess they should have gotten the boat, what with global warming an all.

A beautiful and sad commentary on global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps. Can we save the polar bear?

To Theowrulesnotmyworld: Take it easy on the "Floating Fridge" -- it does fit in, if you think about ...

Mr. Polar Bear and his friends seem to be swimming/hanging on for dear life. If the ice caps melt do to changing weather situations/global warming (which ever you prefer), and our artic friends have no where else to go, an open fridge may be the closest and coolest thing they can find to home. If my interpretation is correct, it is cute and terribly sad all at the same time. I love it.

Andysloth and worldmap are on the right track. This piece is about how climate change impacts arctic animals and ecosystems. For me, the refrigerator is a symbol of the cold/ arctic climate. It is empty (losing resources) and only one animal can fit on it (the glaciers and ice are dwindling). I have read that caribou, polar bears and walrus rely on ice for hunting, mating, migration, resting, ect. The caribou are literally 'going in circles' because they need the ice in order to migrate. The walrus is hanging on to the refrigerator because the it requires a certain amount of resting time on ice in order to survive that it can not get due to the absence of ice. I frequently use circular compositions because they recall the cyclical ways of nature (seasons, life cycles, ect) as well as remind me of how these problems are reoccurring and not really being addressed.

I try to make my work metaphorical so it gets a general idea across, but still allows for different interpretations.

Those lines you used for the polor bear's fur need better rendering. Instead of fur, he looks like he fell in a vat of oil.

Damn, Exxon.

there is something odly live traced looking about the fur on all the animals--and the deer in the back might as well be driftwood

Yeah, the characters look a bit 'paint by numbers'.

I like the concept but the execution doesn't quite do it for me.

Keep up the the eviro-themed efforts though.

I like it...i think the level of detail in the drawings is great for a t-shirt...anything else happening with the background deer and it may blur together oddly. nice job concrete.

why does everyone say that the moose on tits is a bad thing? Cmon we are supposed to all be older than 13 to be members of threadless. Great design! i'd give it a 5 if i could still.
