I believe this would be explained by: The dog is tempted to eat DELICIOUS BONES of the creature in front of him, but the creature is pretty menacing, meaning if the dog were to attempt it he just might die.

I agree with Vico-- I thought it was a leash in the dog's mouth, too...maybe the tongue is too big? Or too hanging-out-the-side? But I also think it would be pretty cool if the dog was begging the monster to take it for a walk. Dogs are SO oblivious.
