the banana is a herb?

...what?

I love the idea, but the text in the middle needs to be stronger.

wundoroo on Jun 21 '06
^I agree with gbread1012.

Botanically, the banana plant might be an herb, but the banana itself is definately a fruit.

I love the design, but the "bananas do not come from trees, they come from plants" hurts me... maybe choose a different word to avoid implying that trees are not plants.

Best on the red, I think - might be too hard to read on natural or white.

thanks for the comments.

i asked threadless to purposely decline this because i forgot to but the placement on my sub... apparently they didnt listen. the placement is supposed to be in the center of the chest and not too big, not too small.

also, bananas come from plants. the plant (called the banana plant, which is an herb) is about as tall as a tree, so many people just assume its a banana tree.

oh and i like how they didnt put my submission comment up. bastards! oh well, i forgive you threadless.

and about the text in some areas being too small... imagine it being like twice the size, which is approximately what it would be on a person.

heres a more high res image (on red, more colours on my deviant art profile):

i almost thoroughly second the comment right above.

the text would be more readable on a shirt because the design would be much larger than it is on your screen.

Cute design, though a banana is still a fruit. To be anal, a herbaceous plant can still have fruit and a banana has all the required parts to be one, even if the commercial variety are sterile. If you revised it to say "The banana is a herb, not a tree" you'd cover it all. Or leave it as is and make it a tshirt to stir debate. ;)

Whatever. I think educational t-shirts AND bananas are great.

I worry about how well that text will show up when it's printed. Those letters are very thin.

Very nice concept though.

I see new guinea... are you an islander, or am i missing something about new guinea that has no relation to being an islander...by the way have you ever tried those small fried bannanas...super sweet, super good
asher27
   asher27 on Jun 22 '06
nah, im from the us, ny specifically.

on my learning quest of bananas i found out that, while south american countries export most of the worlds bananas, they originate from new guinea, and not south america.

This is the 3rd banana sub I've seen today. Is this the new trend?
asher27
   asher27 on Jun 23 '06
i dont know if its the new trend or what, i didnt submit this into threadless loves threadless because bananas have been done before and they probably will be done after this too. personally, this was inspired by where i work (a supermarket) and how pathetic it is that i know almost all of the PLU's of the common fruits and veggies. bananas, for example, are 4011 (which is in my sub, by the way).

It looks like it would sell at A&F. So I guess...I wouldn't call it "threadless" worthy...

The one thing that bugs me is the big PLANTAIN and how it stands out. It kind of unbalances it for me. Maybe if some of the other words were a bit thicker so that the shape of the banana stood out more.

Otherwise, I really like it. I like bananas. And I think I'd buy this.

arabiantealeaves
arabiantealeaves on Jun 25 '06
hokay, a few things:

1) regardless of the factuality of the statement, it should be "an herb", not "a herb".

2) you need a comma in the sentence regarding the country of origin.

3) "on a traffic light yellow means yield, and green means go. on a banana, it's just the opposite, yellow means go ahead, green means stop, and red means, where the fuck did you get that banana at?"
asher27
   asher27 on Jun 25 '06
theres red bananas. theyre supposedly really good.

and its not an herb. we just say it like that cause we dont pronounce the 'h' in herb so its kinda like an erb. its always a before a constanant though, im pretty sure there are no exceptions. and the comma... yes, youre right. either of these things i could change if it were to get printed.

Verdana
Verdana on Jun 27 '06
I rally behind this submission!

(But since you don't pronounce the 'h,' it really is 'an herb.' The a/an rule is about how you say it, not how you spell it.)

I wish the small type held up better. Other than that, it's a sweet design.

Verdana is closer than Arabiantealeaves, but "herb" can be prefaced with either "a" or "an" depending on whether or not the speaker pronounces the "h" or not! 'Cause some people do pronounce the "h".
