I don't know that I like that this shirt tries to say every American is responsible for all of those things when many Americans (or their ancestors) weren't even here when that stuff happened...

I agree with Vice, but I like the concept and execution anyway.
Salsa Shark
Salsa Shark on Jun 05 '06
It's an interesting concept, but it makes it seem like the American middle class is responsible for all these things...which doesn't really make sense. I don't know, that's just what I get out of it.

What's up with the rainbow? Did you do that instead of writing something about gay marriage on one of their shirts? Just kidding…

The visual is a little bit of a stretch along with the writing. Confusing at best (at least from this simple-minded individual).

Instead of showing a family, show a family of politicians. This would work nicely with an image of Mt. Rushmore.

It looks like you're blaming this average family for stuff that wasn't their fault at all. The rainbow could be cleaner, too.

It's a great idea! but I think it would've been more effective to express modern day issues... like innocents dying in our war. American greed while Africa and other nations are starving.... ect.

I don't think I'd wear this, but I do like the idea of lumping in the american nuclear family with all those other ridiculous atrocities

idea is good
execuion falls on the side of cliche

it's funny how education works
you find out what happens
then you find out who to blame something on
and then people can feel better with their pointing fingers
talking for the brainless heads.

<soapbox>This reminds me of reading stuff by Charles Mills about how many many people who are not responsible for terrible things still benefit from them today.</soapbox> So, I like it a lot, but I don't know if I'd wear it because everyone else seems to be getting something else out of it.

'Vietnamese War' WTF?

Decent artwork, lousy idea. I'm thinking the only political t-shirt we'll see on Threadless is 'Everyone poops'-and for good reason.

"C20Percent, at 1:00pm on Jun 5, 2006

Trust me. We did Hawaii a favor. "

The same way England did India a favor?

People would rather be ruled by their own inept leadership, than the average leadership of someone else.

And I know thats not how the quote goes.

If you're going to go this route, I suggest that the people's hair and eyes have no color- more to the point of being "all" americans.

i think it would be better if their shirt said family secrets or dirty little secrets like 'im having an affair' or something, to show the real troubles under the illusion of a happy family.

I don't understand why people are so hostile toward political shirts. I personally think this is a great idea, but I'd prefer a different color.

All these people criticizing the political aspects of this are assholes.

Shouldn't it be the 'Vietnam War' and not the 'Viatnamese War'? I am not a history expert or anything, but I am pretty sure I'm right here. It kind of discredits your statement when you make a mistake like that.

And for the record I like America. I think it's a swell place to live.

moniquerssneakers
moniquerssneakers on Jun 07 '06
YeahYeah Vietnam is a country, Viatnamese is a nationality, you are correct. Also the partridge family called they want their rainbow-circle back. Don't forget every freedom aloted to the anglos of America was hard fought and won by the trials of war and alienation. This is offensive not only to the the adverage nuclear American family of which is rapidly shrinking, but to those who fought against and for the tribulations you merely listed as negative space fillers. It takes ownership away from those who suffered and lost ahrd fought battles.

Also speaking soley in regards to the artwork itself conotations aside poor use of space, line weight, color, and repetition.

This shirt succeeds in being contraversial but fails at making any political statement. A person who wears this shirt proves to everyone that he is a finger-pointing, guilt-mongering, high-minded, better-than-thou, snob. The six year old in the picture has just as much blood on his hands as the person who would wear this shirt.
jobydick
jobydick on Jun 08 '06
well perhaps it's not saying that all of these atrocities were caused directly by the middle class american family, but rather that to this day people still don't react to what's happening (on a bigger scale) outisde the country and instead go to sears and take family portraits with rainbow backgrounds ........
in any case it's true that whoever wears this shirt will have a pretty poor excuse that he/she is "doing something" about all of this.
Cha-Cha
Cha-Cha on Jun 08 '06
Don't you think that it more represents the fact that these things are being pressed upon American families than the families are actually causing all of these things to happen thmselves?

I've lived in Asia, and I've lived in Europe. Americans are the only people in the world that hate their country so much. It's sad really; patriotism in America is dead.
kat1251
kat1251 on Jun 09 '06
I don't know what this says...

Let's all hate middle-class Americans?

The end justifies the means?

I want to make a political statement by creating and/or wearing a confusing and pointless t-shirt?

idk...

i'm sure there's a market for this, but i don't think it's threadless. the conceptual problem for me is that aside from the blue eyes, they all look Hispanic to me, which was incredibly confusing.

www.freehawaii.com to the person who said we did hawaii a favor, some hawaiians disagree... I'm in Texas so what do I know...

Also, I think its badly exicuted (sp?) but the message has weight to it, and we should really pay good attention to politics and government, since they are what decides our rights and those silly little unimportant things like that.

The shirt causes controversy just for controversy sake. I prefer to keep my political messages relatively tasteful, I wouldn't buy.
