The key word is imitate - and you did not imitate. You directly appropriated copywritten material without permission. And now, exhibit B, the appropriated material:

Oh, and to leojsoap, there's a difference between pop culture reference and pop culture appropriation. Clearly people recognized this as Escher's work. But some of us also recognize that even as a "tribute" to Escher, this shirt still violates not only copyright law, but also a designer's responsibility to be creative. Even if the concept isn't completely original (tesselations as a concept, in this case), the designer still should have the integrity to design something that doesn't clearly use someone else's exact material. Exact. Material.

So to sum up, when the pop culture reference comprehension was passed out, I was designing my own stuff -- not behind bars.

i absolutely love the escher "tribute". Someone's gotta translate his work to something wearable besides lousy souvenir museum store t-shirts.

I think the idea is quite original.
If you had slapped the pattern on the shirt and called it a day, I'd be cranky.
But I think the escaping lizard is what makes it DIFFERENT.
Thus, FUNNY.

I am not a fan of the colors red/orange/yellow ... (I'm more of a cooler-color person) but the idea is hilarious. And I'd wear it anyway. $4
