I think it would look great if you didn't have the shadow of the anteater, just the maze... that would be far more intriguing. nice idea.

I love the anteater shadow as the maze. The ants = <3. I don't like the colors though.

This could be done with or without the shape of the anteater behind the maze. I will put a picture of it without on my profile, along with the other color options I have there. If you see the maze alone and like it more, please say so

i don't like the tail hanging down, Is it standing on a ledge or something, or does the tail just go into the ground. make it go out behind the anteater.

This is nice, but I think you could do without the furry tail-ness. since there's none of it anywhere else, I don't think it works. Also, I think that the tail would look nicer if it wasn't completely vertical. maybe make it look like it's laying on the ground? overall I think it's great, though<3.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jun 05 '06
Ok, I like where it's going so far. I agree that I think it would work better without the furry tail. Also, instead of just having the anteater and the ants, how about if you have an ant colony that the anteater is invading. Perhaps have his tongue going into an ant hill or something? I'm really impressed by the maze itself; I suck at drawing those things. Also, the tongue is just a bit too long for my liking. I don't know anteater anatomy that well, but it seems just a tad excessive (I do know they have long tongues, however). Nice job.

MCole on Jun 05 '06
Since the anteater is in a comical/ non realistic the ants should be the same way. I actually like this design but the ants don't seem to fit. The lines to the maze should also be thinner, or just reduce the amount used, to me it looks like it takes up too much space and the point isn't as obvious just glancing at it. The design is good, but could be better excecuted.

[also add more hair not only around the tail but around the head and torso, it seems too round]
emstack
emstack on Jun 05 '06
The concept is really cool, but it's not much my style the way it is now. I'd actually appreciate the opposite of what KimberlyAnne and tracerbullet are saying; I'd appreciate _more_ detail.

Sure, keep the focus around the maze and the ants, but add a bit more around that central theme. Maybe some more fur and more realistic fur, or even better: it becomes like a crossection of an anteater, you can see the three-dimensional shape of one half of the anteater as if it's been sliced in half, showing the maze on the inside. You could even attempt putting a bit of the anteater's actual innards in there as part of the maze.

Also, more ants please! It'd be great to see some ants currently attempting the maze, getting stuck places, encountering barriers and obstacles, getting hopelessly lost, then finally finding out their giant quest was just to the anteater's own belly.

But alas, those are only _my_ opinions on how the design should be shaped. It's obvious the others before me seem to appreciate the simplicity of the maze as it is much more than I do, and of course to each his own. And I understand the argument that its simplicity is what makes it what it is, and I understand simplicity can sometimes be used better than detail to show an idea (and that in this case it might have been your goal to make the anteater's innards seem like the classic coloring book maze), but in this case I really think more detail would aid the design, while still keep the focus on the idea that it's like a maze.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but I suppose that's kinda what you want anyways :P and again, _great_ concept, I'd just like a little _more_

P.S. I just realized I'm really saying the equivalent of a music teacher saying: "Once more, with _feeling_" Teehee!

P.P.S I also realized without the aid of html formatting I end up using "_" a lot instead of italics.

I like the other color options in your profile better than the one above. The colors would look better if the shadow wasn't there. I also really like the design better without the shadow/outline of the anteater. If you do decide to keep the outline, I say loose the little hair around the tail or add a little all around the outline. Overall its a good idea and i gave it a 4$.

i really like the color choice because its nice a bold (great summer colors).. im not the most artistic person.. but hope this is helpful.. i know other have said this, but i dont like the way the tail just heads straiht down.. bc i know its not a 'realistic' design.. but its really not possible for its tail to be that long and go straight down while hes still leveled staight (ie standing up).. since u decided to add fur to its tail.. i thinnk it should either appear throughout the animals body or not at all.. bc it seems kinda random u know.. like all of a sudden theres small details of fur whereas the rest of its body lacked fur. i would also like if there were ants scattered throughout the maze.. not a ton but a few where and there u know making there way.. and the ants seem to all be facing it eating (spoutish) thing.. and like really why would all 5 of them be facing the same direction maybe have them a bit scattered u know... or someone else mentioned this have the anteater be invading something.. bc i doubt theyd all line up to be eaten ..

hope that helps.. i really do like the design.. and thats what id fix.. but tehre are also things i really like about this design.. i love the maze details and i think the maze all in all looks very nice... the ants also look nice and have a small shadow to them which i like.. its a neat idea and u executed it very well.. im sure with everyones suggestions it will tweak up to be a very nice design

Hello!

Would make my comment short n sweet, so...

Good combo choice, green and maroon. If you wish, have it in a maroon shirt and green anteater for a fall look. Everything looks great. And finally...make the tail curve underneath. That's all. Good luck on your sub!

I actually like the one in your profile with only the maze and no outline. Probably becuase right now, I really don't like the tail reminding me of some bloody chainsaw. And as others said before, the tongue does seem a ltitle too long. Maybe if the tongue was reaching into something like an anthill or tree with a maze within that. Also, the ants kind of creep me out a bit because I'm scared of spiders/bugs. I think that little black things with legs will freak some people (me) out. I think it's really cool that the maze actually leads to the stomach though! 3 and a half if I could give 0.5 scores!

i think the ants could be doing some cool stuff as aposed to just forfilling their roll by sitting in the belly. Imagine the hijinx they could get up to in the maze... its cool, maybe just a little more attention to the details.

maybe instead of a maze it could be an ant farm but i dont see the appeal of it on a shirt placement seems a little wierd, lots of "why do you have a picture of an ant eater on your shirt" comments

Oh my god yes, i rated this a 5 and I'd buy it already! I just didn't comment on it. I love it. I love things like that and how people will actually stop the people who are wearing and stretch the shirt out, and try to figure it out. I really like the idea, and the color. I really like to do those kinds of puzzles and I guess it will be sold out pretty soon.

the ants don't get a prize for winning? Are we to believe it is just their destiny to get to his stomach? Blasphemy!

......maybe his stomache juices are an ant drug, or aphrodisiac even. better yet, the ants get a sense of accomplishment for solving the maze which outweighs the agony of being slowly digested. yeah.
steve_swartz
steve_swartz on Jun 05 '06
rrich76, i love what you've come up with here in Anti-Amazing. you've got three things going on, all at once: a real maze, ants trying to find their way through the maze, ants at the far end joining seeker to seekee, and then an anteater who is the maze and gives a horrible existential twist to the search. like the danse macabre, the little dudes are following a path clearly not of their own larger-scale doing.

this interesting confluence of ideas is at the crux of the submission, and they make it interesting. at the same time, the submission is executed very well graphically, which means it works all the way through. the maze is interesting as a maze. the anteater is well drawn and fits the maze nicely (rrich76 has another version that is just the maze: it works, too, but i like the detailing in (say) the tail hair, and so would slightly prefer the one with the "shadow" or backdrop). the little detailless ants make the whole thing into a nice power/victum shirt: you can see it as politics, you can see it as "the system", you can even call me ray. but i digress.

as a marketing idea for threadless, maybe this design could come with a rope attached to the color and to an indelible marker. folks could come up and solve the maze while you were distracted, and then you'd have to buy another copy of the shirt. rrich76 is a genius in that way, too.

this isn't the best design in the world. all the hard lines and angles mirror the obvious power dimension and make it a relatively harsh and well-defined sort of shirt. but in its breadth of accomplishment and layers of meaning, it's quite intriguing.

if this comment wins the artist's prize, the street team points will support the purchase of a year's subscription to the 12-month-club, which will be given out every month to someone on the blog. thanks!

overall i like the design. the eye movement in is great. i think it has a cool, cleanly executed concept. i would like to see some ants inside the maze. i think the colors work well, that shirt color is not used too often. i would also like to maybe see some ants crawling around the shirt randomly just a few.
i know its short, but over all i think its a sucsessful design that doesnt need to be nit picked. best of luck. i cant wait to see your next work!

croox on Jun 05 '06
Here is for the points! And your submission's sake!
I want those :P

I really think you should personalize the ants more. Like I said in the blog, you should put the antes attempting the maze/puzzle crying because they can't get out, and perhaps a single ant inside, and a single ant outside mocking the ones inside.

Probably you could add more detail to the ant eater, like his face, you could leave the design in the back, and add another layer on top of it with a high opacity, as if it were X-Rays you were seeing through the anteater. You could probably put the fur, like emstack said, and make it more three-dimensional. But really increase the opacity more than 50%.

Another suggestion but not so important would be an ant being outside the maze with a pencil trying to figure it out.

Hope the suggestions work out =)

Haha, great concept! I would draw in on more ant near the head as an "eye". It would also connect the image as a whole together to have a(n) ant(s) in movement through the maze. good work!!
