Definitely appreciate the original thinking that went into this and the colors and design itself but I can't help but see the girl's actions as a cruel, or at least naive, prank. That and the GIANT bottle of hooch really seem to trivialize the problem of homelessness for me.

In a cruel twist of irony, the homeless man turns out to be a child predator!!

All joking aside, am I the only one disturbed by the fact that this little girl is all by herself out on the streets with hobos? I get your concept (and it's great, by the way) but the design could be taken the wrong way as though it's okay for unattended children to help strange men. Which is fine for the regular competition, if you like that sort of thing, but it doesn't put the Red Cross in a nice light.

I'm sorry to not be as encouraging as everyone else and perhaps I'm reading too far into it. But I guess I'm just a little put off by the fact that everyone keeps raving about this design when personally, I don't see what's so wonderful. (And I hope you don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to be honest with my opinion instead of gush about your greatness.)
UmbrellaJane
UmbrellaJane on Apr 16 '06
I don't know, to me it's almost saying that the Red Cross isn't really fixing anything, just making things prettier to look at while ignoring the underlying issues. In that light, it's pretty insulting. You probably didn't mean it that way, so I'm not trying to bag on you, but I don't think it's right for the organization.

It's a great illustration though, and artistically, I do like it.
steve_swartz
steve_swartz on Apr 16 '06
i think the little girl is doing what she can. she can't fix everything, but, she can make things better. as this is what the red cross does (they're not some imaginary dad who fixes everything at no cost), i think this is a remarkable shirt. it will play even better when it gets out of the contest and onto the chest: it's one of the few red cross designs that has a bit of human insight and works for people who don't know that there was a threadless contest that caused these designs to be made....

typical bloke - lies around all day while the mrs does all the cooking, cleaning, gardening AND house renovations! Actually, the bit that weirds me out is how seperate the two characters are - where is their relationship? who is he to her and vice versa? i don't think this shirt has much to say for red cross nor in general. well executed design but a weak end concept - i think the theme could be developed a lot further. 2.
d3d
   d3d on Apr 17 '06

Kaleidoscope*swe* on Apr 17 '06
How can this be seen as cruel... first of all, if she was trying to ruin things for the homeless, why would she give the hobo food? And you have to put your self in the little girls perspective, it might not help the hobo but shes doing what she conciders to be helpful and beautiful. I think its one of the best red cross subs so far, the illustration is amazing and the perspective makes it even more impressive. 5$

Verdana
Verdana on Apr 17 '06
Believe it or not, little girls can and do come in contact with the homeless. I'm sorry if you don't like that fact--or the fact that there are people who sleep in cardboard boxes--but it is true.

This is a sweet image of a little girl trying to make things better for someone in the only way she knows how. She isn't writing "get a job, low-life," and she isn't drawing obscene things around his possessions. She's trying to cheer him up. And she's using pink sidewalk chalk, for goodness sake--it isn't as though she's vandalising anything.

It's not cruel. Naïve, perhaps, but not cruel, not mocking, not pointless, not encouraging child neglect.

I *love* this. I don't see him waking up being mat at all... I see him waking up and being completely touched by the innocent sweetness of that little girl.

To me, it really shows how most children think... They're not able to see a big picture yet, they just see little ways to make things look beautiful... She can't buy this man a house... or even build him one... but she can use what she has to try and make what he does have a little more pleasant... even if that is just her imagination, heart, and a little piece of pink chalk... and a sammich that her mother probably made for her.

Innocent, pure, and genuine. I absolutely love it!
PorgyNBess
PorgyNBess on Apr 17 '06
P.S. Even if this shirt doesn't scream "Red Cross" ... I don't think that matters at all.

This shirt represents how anyone and everyone can help people less fortunate than themselves just by giving what they *do* have. That's what the Red Cross asks of us... to give what we can... and that's just what this little girl did.

Honestly I like helping the needy, but not the homeless. Where I live, all they want is money for alcohol and cigarettes. Had a run-in with 2 homeless men today actually who cussed us when we wouldn't give them money, then threatened violence. More of my co-workers gathered, then the men wandered away.
I don't know if the Red Cross wants their primary target audience to be considered the homeless. They do so much more than that.

hey d3d, your debating skills are outstanding. you have certainly won me over with that spirited response. i just plain forgot that the red cross was all about charity - you know, where the good people do all the helping and the mad / sad / bad people just lie there and accept the good deeds (well the deserving ones anyways). yeah, the girl sure shows us the good ol' selfless tradition. and look! her skin is white too! silly me! thanks for challenging me to think harder - i am grateful for your charitable thoughts and yeah, you are so right - it WAS good for me! I should have asked for your help sooner. Bless you.

to me, this completely encompasses all that charity is about. i think this is beautifully done, and you've captured the innocent naivete of children -- wanting to help people, often in very "simple" ways.

i think often times as people grow older, they overlook a lot of things, but children always know just what to do, in their own gentle way.

thanks for making me smile, and ignore all the cynics! we need more people like this little girl in the world, that's for sure. just because a person is homeless does not make them a monster.

I absolutely LOVE this shirt. I can't believe it didn't win. I'm honestly disappointed. I would've bought this the very moment threadless should've printed it. It's so perfect. It would've felt so at home in my closet with the rest of my threadless shirts. There should be an acception, just for this one, because I want it. I really really do.

how is it possible that this design is not printed yet? it's simply one of the most emotional designs i've ever seen at Threadless (excuse my english if it's not spelled correctly). I thought i've already written something about it sooner, but anyway, it's beautiful, beautiful and beautiful!!!
