i think the concept is a bit shallow. not that every t-shirt needs concept, but when you're making a statement make sure that it's clear. this one strikes me as a bit obtuse. and constipated.

Why is America the only unhapy one? Change it so it's unbiased, then we'll talk. Or make the french guy a snooty asshole, the arab a terrorist and the chinese good at math.

Ugh.

Absolutely hilarious.

..But, seeing as I live in a part of the 'States where the people are over-the-top patriots, I'd more or rather get jumped or stabbed.. electrocuted.. the list goes on and on. It's an awesome design, though.

I think America has (probably more than) its fair share of problems, and it may not be the most popular kid in class right now (understatement), but I wouldn't wear any shirt that alienates any one of the countries. It's counter-productive and shallow to categorize a nation of people based on bad seeds.

Californian born and raised. I think this this shirt is GREAT. Almost everywhere else i've been people were happy to help (in general) but here it seems like the prevelent idea in the US is to look out for #1. I'm not a big fan of that mentality. And besides, with all the outsourcing, the white collar businessman has become the American Icon.

Is the one on the far right a Beefeater? I think it would be more fun to put one of those guards with the big fuzzy hats that never change their expressions. They are cool.

I love how everyone thinks american's are assholes. No, thats just the American President, George W. Bush. I'm an american and I dont think I'm an asshole. For example, I would like to comment on your design in a constructive and respectful way:

"Go fuck a piece of glass, please."
SFpirate
SFpirate on Apr 13 '06
Hmmm, It's ok... it's probably worth a 5, at least a 4, except why is everyone the same color? It doesn't bother me until I start thinking about it, and then it's like... HEY NOW, WAIT A MINUTE.... That's the only thing I have against it. For everyone up there saying that it's a stereotype: So? there are enough stereotypes going around on all those other people up there (except I don't see anything representing anyone African...?). Recently there have been more things making fun of Americans. And that's all good, and one more can't hurt--hey, we're American (many of us here), it's just making fun of our business-suit-wearing friends. All in good fun. Now when people start saying everyone with a turban is a terrorist, that's where we get into trouble........ and people start being mean. Don't be mean.

I'd like to see some different colors there, that's all.
kc_6201
kc_6201 on Apr 13 '06
Everyone is forgetting that the design is limited to 4 colors, hence all of them being the same skin tone.
mattylee
mattylee on Apr 13 '06
yeah... the four color thing really hurt the design. i wanted to include more countries, but i kind of had to stick with the fairer skintoned races just so it didnt look too over the top (which is why africa was unrepresented... caucasian africans just dont make sense and to do them in black would probably be offensive).

As for the "anti-American" feel, I would like to point out that I am, in fact, an American. I was born and raised and live in America. However, I have done quite a bit of traveling during the last few years (5 continents down), and, especially during the war in Iraq, I noticed that the public perception of America was quickly changing... and not for the better.

So, when I was watching TV and the ad for disney world came on with all those funny little dolls, I jokingly stated that they really need to change America's section (we've still got cowboys and indians... sheesh). My friend, who has also spent considerable time outside the US, and I came to the conclusion that the most appropriate modern US stereotype was an uptight, slightly paranoid, businessman...

Truth is, very few stereotypes are true for 100% of every country. It's just the percieved image. Six out of seven night a week I can turn on the television and find an Islamic terrorist on some show, whether it is 24 or Family Guy. And no one is offended by that. Because the American people have come to believe in the stereotypes. Well, here's our stereotype, everyone. We're assholes. Deal with it, or work to change it. But thats the way it is.

Honestly, for those of you who get it, I am glad. It means you are aware and more than likely want it to change. And for those of you who dont get it, I hope that I have done something to make you more aware of the "State of the Union".

If the guy with the turban had a bomb strapped to him I bet there wouldnt be half the complaints, but no its showing america as bad so everyones gotta go crazy... im british and ive been stereotyped as what i assume to be a beefeater, a guy who dresses like shakespeare, at least in the US its implied you know how to dress well...

"Well, here's our stereotype, everyone. We're assholes. Deal with it, or work to change it. But thats the way it is."

Yeah, its really hard to change the stereotype when assholes like yourself design t-shirts to propogate it. What a hypocrite - YOU are the reason everyone hates us Mr. Cultured. Who cares how many contintents you've visited. If you want the stereotype to change, why would you design a shirt that only further expresses that stereotype?

And, thank you so much enlightened one for "opening my eyes" and making me "aware" of what's going on. Thank the lord for folks like you out there keeping us all in the know. If only we all had the budget to go jet-setting around the globe picking up these invaluable tidbits of wisdom like yourself.

Grow up.

The detail and art work in general is worth a five. I'd probably wear it if it exploited all of the nations issues, or none at all. I guess I'm just not feelin' this. I'm giving it a 3 but mainly for the artwork.

Guy-
What percentage of America today would admit that the rest of the world sees us as "assholes"?
The problem with our culture is that we are extremely insulated from the rest of the world. We decide what is best for ourselves, and often times do not stop to think about the others who will be affected by our decisions. THAT is a major problem. Until the average American realizes, "Oh... wait... maybe there's something wrong with us, too..." then things will never change.

As for my quote-unquote jet-setting lifestyle and my supposed infinate budget, you may be interested to know that I am, in fact, rather broke. I am a twenty three year old student that makes a modest living in web design and development. My travels have been funded entirely by myself, but have been connected with several charitable organizations, including the Red Cross, the Peace Corps, and several religious institutions. This is not intended to raise myself to any plateu. It is simply to clear the air. Budget has nothing to do with it. Anyone who is willing to put a little bit of time and effort into it, has no excuse to not lend a hand.

In the end, this design wasn't intended to change the world. It was meant to poke fun at America and help us remember that we're not, in fact, as perfect and wonderful as we pretend to be. Seriously, if we can't laugh at ourselves and maybe realize that we're at least a small part of the problem, then there's really not much hope for change.

((PS- Case in point: isn't it ironic that Americans get upset about the "American guy" being portrayed as grumpy or paranoid, but many of those same people would have no problem with the "Arab" portrayed as a savage terrorist with a big ol' bomb strapped to him.))

Isn't it great to live in a Democracy? Isn't it nice to have a country that allows you to be displeased with the actions of your government or the general attitude of the populace? Isn't it lovely to not be labeled anti-patriotic just for having a viewpoint differs from the majority? Isn't it wonderful that I can say that this country is going to hell in a public forum and not worry about some type of political backlash?

So, in response to your comment: If you think that patriotism is complacency, you're in the wrong goddamn country.

Fun fact: The following men were all guilty of treason.
Ghandi
George Washington
Jesus Christ
Oskar Schindler

So if you think that a country can remain great without dissenting opinion and if you think that admitting to being imperfect is a character flaw, then maybe you are the one that is truly unpatriotic. Maybe you're just too much of a coward to face change or too lazy and self involved to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Or maybe you're just in denial.

But if you think you can blindly follow the decisions of the government and never question a thing that they do, then you should probably "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE COUNTRY".

WHAT I AM TRYING TO CONVEY THROUGH THIS SHIRT IS THAT EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE WORLD IS STRIVING TOWARDS A MORE UNITED GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT, THE UNITED STATES (AS A COUNTRY, AND NOT AS INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE) REPEATEDLY TAKES STEPS TO DISTANCE OURSELVES. WE ARE PARANOID AND AFRAID. WE HAVE BEGUN TO LABEL PEOPLE AS "UN-AMERICAN" JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT. AND THE REST OF THE WORLD IS BEGINNING TO NOTICE. THINGS ARE QUICKLY BECOMING "US vs. THEM" AND IT ISNT RIGHT.

Now, if anyone would like to intelligently debate as to how this particular opinion is mistaken, please, by all means, show me that I am wrong. Truthfully, I would love to be wrong on this matter, but I am afraid that there will be very little evidence to the contrary. But if you can't come up with a better argument than "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY COUNTRY", then I would kindly ask you to keep your mouth shut before you prove my point and make yourself sound silly.
