French toast is popular as a breakfast main course in North America, parts of Europe, and China.

French toast is made with bread (generally pre-sliced) and eggs; some common additions are milk, water, or orange juice to thin the eggs, sugar, and spices such as allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Vanilla may also be added to the egg mixture. In restaurants throughout the United States and Canada, the bread is usually thick white bread made especially for use in French toast; when made at home, regular sliced bread is often used. Many people prefer to use breads that contain dried fruit as the bread base for French toast.

Although usually served as a sweetly spiced dish, some prefer a savoury version, seasoned with salt and pepper instead.

The eggs are beaten (and mixed with other liquids, as described above) and poured into a wide, shallow bowl. Individual slices of bread are then dipped into the egg mixture and flipped, so both sides are evenly coated. If desired, the bread may be left to soak briefly to absorb more of the mixture; however, too much soaking will make the bread fall apart (which is why some cooks prefer to use bread that is closer to the end of its shelf-life). The slices of egg-coated bread are then placed on a frying pan or griddle previously coated with butter, and cooked until both sides are browned and the egg has cooked through.

The cooked slices are usually served with jam or butter and maple syrup, though it can also be served with fruit syrup, apple sauce, whipped cream, chocolate, powdered sugar, or nuts such as pecans.

A French toast sandwich made with ham, swiss cheese, and turkey is called a Monte Cristo sandwich.

Many New York diners make French toast using thick slices of challah bread.

In the western and southwestern United States, several restaurants will prepare it with Sourdough bread.

In China, it is usually served with honey syrup. In Hong Kong-style western restaurants and cha chaan tengs in Hong Kong or Taiwanese dessert places, it may be served with butter and without a sweetening ingredient, and may be made out of a jam or peanut butter sandwich. French toast is usually served with the bread's crust, but it may be served without. It is called 西多士 (Cantonese IPA: /sɐɪ55 tɔ55 sɪ35/; Jyutping: sai1 do1 si2; Mandarin Pinyin: xīduōshì; literally "western toast", but actually an abbreviation of "法蘭西多士", "French toast") in Hong Kong usually deep-fried, and 吐司 (Pinyin: Tùshī; literally “toast”) in Taiwan.

Some people claim that this dish was called "German toast" in the U.S.A. before World War I and was changed to "French toast" because of anti-German sentiment. A popular cookbook from 1918 does refer to it by that name. However, the term "French toast" can be found in print in the U.S.A. as early as 1871. The Oxford English Dictionary cites usages of "French toast" in English as early as 1660 (toasted bread with wine, orange juice, and sugar), and cites an egg-based recipe of the same name from 1882. It has also been called "American toast" in the U.S., where there is a story that it was invented in 1724 by a man named Joseph French in a roadside tavern near Albany, New York.

In early 2003, the name of French toast was changed again to "freedom toast" in the White House, the U.S. Congress, and in a few U.S. restaurants, this time due to anti-French sentiment stemming from France's refusal to support a war in Iraq. (A similar renaming occurred with French fries, which were called freedom fries in those places. In reaction, the French embassy merely commented that French fries are, in fact, from Belgium.)

best on navy, orange or yellow. please center it, it loos so odd down the side like that. But it is AWESOME design-wise, and very funny. It took me a second to put it all together, so maybe (an off-hand suggestion) make frames for each scene or put more negative space around each vignette. Food expressions are priceless. I will have more remorse when cooking next Sunday morning.

Breakfast is a meal preceding lunch or dinner and usually eaten in the morning. Less frequently, the term breakfast may also be used by people that work evenings or late nights to refer to the first meal of the day, although it may not include the same ingredients as breakfast in the standard sense.

The erosion of breakfast has been an ongoing trend in the West since at least the early 20th century, coinciding with later waking times than when most Westerners had agricultural occupations. Today, hampered by busy morning schedules, many neglect breakfast or skip it entirely. This trend now exists in industrialized nations worldwide, where it is accompanied frequently by replacing local breakfast traditions with modern Western-style foods, often packaged or pre-made. Nevertheless, many nutritionists consider breakfast a very important meal, since it provides vital nourishment and energy for starting that day. Studies have indicated that children and adolescents who usually have breakfasts generally consumed more daily calories than those who skip this meal and, yet, are less likely to be overweight1.

Typical breakfasts by world regions

Africa- The typical breakfast in Africa varies greatly from region to region, with the former colonial power of an area exerting a great cultural influence:

* In Algeria, the typical breakfast consists of coffee with French bread and butter or jam.
* In Cameroon, the morning meal is simple and designed to hold one over until lunch. Breakfast often consists of beignets, which are either eaten with beans or dipped in bouilli, a sticky, sugary liquid derived from maize. Others eat fried eggs, often made into an omelette with other substances, such as beans, spaghetti noodles, or sardines.

Asia-
* China. Chinese breakfasts typically include huājuǎn, mántou (steamed breads), rice congee/jook (zōu), shāobǐng (unleavened pocket-bread with sesame) and yóutiáo. Dòunǎi or dòujiāng (soy milk), sweetened or savory, is used as a dip for the fried breadsticks. Street vendors also offer a wide variety of hot foods, often deep-fried. Items commonly sold are fagao (Rice Cakes), jiānbǐng (fried pancakes), bāozi (steamed buns with meat or vegetable filling), lúobogāo (turnip cakes), zòngzi, noodles and soups. The dim sum breakfast, originally found in Hong Kong, Guangdong, and other parts of southern China, is a world in itself, and is often eaten as brunch.
* India. In South India, the most popular breakfast is an assortment with several possible main dishes, such as idlis, vadas, dosas and chapatis. These are most often served with hot sambar and at least one kind of chutney (usually coconut chutney). Breakfast is usually followed by a glass of tea or coffee, both made with milk and sugar. Pongal is a common breakfast item in Tamil Nadu, while uppittu and kesaribath are the common items in Karnataka. The usual North Indian breakfast consists of chapati or paratha breads with a vegetable curry, plus sweets like kaju burfi. In Maharashtra, poha, Upma or shira (similar to kesaribath is frequently eaten for breakfast. In urban areas, omlettes and simple butter sandwiches are becoming a popular breakfast food.

A typical Japanese breakfast.
A typical Japanese breakfast.

* Japan. A traditional Japanese breakfast includes items like miso soup, rice with nori or other garnishes, natto, grilled fish, raw egg , and a pickled vegetable. Western breakfast foods may be eaten. However, the influence of Japanese travelers has made the traditional breakfast a standard option on the menus of many upscale hotels world-wide.
* Korea. In Korea, breakfast has historically not existed as a distinct concept. Traditionally, food eaten in the morning does not differ substantially from the other meals of the day; kimchi (a mixture of fermented vegetables) and rice are staples of the morning meal. Today, however, people are more likely to eat Western-style breakfasts similar to those in the United States.
* Malaysia and Singapore. In Malaysia and Singapore, breakfast sometimes consists of a popular Malay food called nasi lemak. Other food such as roti canai (known as roti prata in Singapore), kaya toast and wonton noodles are also among the favorites.
* Myanmar. In Myanmar, the traditional breakfast is chapati or naan (Indian-style flatbreads) dipped in sweet-milk (home-made sweet condensed milk). Mohinga, a noodle soup is often eaten for breakfast in cities, where hawkers are common.
* Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. In Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia it is customary to eat soup for breakfast, as well as congee. Street eateries in Bangkok offer a variety of different soups.
* Philippines. A favourite traditional breakfast in the Philippines consists of garlic fried rice, fried or scrambled eggs, and a choice of breakfast meat: beef tapa (like a fried beef jerky), pork tocino (caramelised pork), longaniza (breakfast sausage), dried salty, smoked fish or sardines, sauteed corned beef, or crispy pork adobo, often with Western-style baked beans, sliced tomatoes and a local pickle (achara) on the side. Alternatively, a cheese-topped breakfast pastry called an ensaimada (a colonial relative of the Mallorcan ensaimada) is also eaten, usually with hot chocolate, as is pan de sal (Philippine breakfast roll) filled with a buffalo milk white cheese, and local barako coffee.

[edit]

Australia

The typical breakfast of Australians resembles breakfast in many Western countries. Owing to the warm weather in most parts of Australia, generally breakfast is light, consisting of cereals, toast, fruit, and fruit juices rather than cooked items. A full English breakfast might still be enjoyed on weekends or at a café, but is not a daily ritual.

Australia has a unique spread called Vegemite that is routinely smeared on toast for breakfast. It is similar to a popular British spread called Marmite, but has very few followers outside of Australia other than expatriates.

I love it. My only problem is in the straight down the front look. Could it possibly come diagonally from top left to bottom right or, even better, in the three comic panel style silverkey mentioned above? Actually, I think the three comic panel style would be best, but the design is AMAZING. I give it a 5. Change the layout and I'll give it the buy too.
