If it's not a right angle, it's a wrong angle.
Graphic designers are indeed very anal about how things line up, grids, baselines etc.
Set in Helvetica Neue, what else?

Um... I wouldn't wear anything that said I did it up the pooper...
joshualeigh
joshualeigh on Apr 04 '06
It's not intended to be rude.

It's about designers being very obsessive and neat – 'anally retentive'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anally_retentive

All letters line up to a tight grid and are set in Helvetica Neue which represents a correction of the 'designers' typeface'
Wilde Nut
Wilde Nut on Apr 04 '06
I like the idea, but I never use the tile grid, i make my own grid lines
Wilde Nut
Wilde Nut on Apr 04 '06
plus the type isn't diplayed very designerly, it's just two lines of a basic font all in the same size.
tornado_of_snow
tornado_of_snow on Apr 04 '06
It's also not even centered on the grid... which would probably piss off a lot of anal retentive people...
carrifaery
carrifaery on Apr 04 '06
agreed, it would have to be centered, maybe a more designer-y font too. funny otherwise.
Booper
Booper on Apr 04 '06
Yeah, I agree. The fact that it's not centered really bothers me.
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Apr 04 '06
I get it... but to the basic public it would look like a very ignorant shirt, not to mention for a shirt about graphic design, there isnt any good looking graphic quality to it, i mean it just kinda sucks
velvetsamurai
velvetsamurai on Apr 04 '06
^^^^
i am with ellsswhere. i get it, but the general public wouldnt. and being that i live in the south, most are too closed minded to listen to the explaination.
also if you gearing your shirt towards graphic designers it would be great to see something more dynamic and visually appealing. maybe a text you have invented. and some other artwork to go with it that represtents the idea in a unique and visually engaging way.
good luck

"It's not intended to be rude."

umm clearly you did, because without the double meaning this shirt would just be stupid =P stick to your guns.
Gargess
Gargess on Apr 04 '06
I would buy this shirt in a heart beat if the design were a tad edgier, maybe even international. but awsome tho.
jesusinameshhat
jesusinameshhat on Apr 04 '06
Haa haa haa! I like the idea, I think it really is pretty funny, but like someone stated earlier, make it a little more 'designy'...
joshualeigh
joshualeigh on Apr 04 '06
Thanks for your comments guys.

I know it's hard to tell from the rasterized gif image but the text is perfectly aligned to the square grid. The text sits on the baseline and the x-height of the type also sits on a gridline.

The background grid is a whole number of large grid squares. The text sits on this grid to coincide with the thicker grid lines (all of which can't be seen on the rough image)

The 'designy' feel is a modernist approach. Something that most academic designers would use. Helvetica Neue. The off-centre thing is also a modernist idea, but is still stricly adhearing to the grid Muller-Brockmann style.

I designed a tee with 'typographers do it anally' where you could see the body of each piece of type (a typeface that I designed) but threadless rejected it.

Thanks for all your votes. Keep it up guys. I really appreciate your comments!

I assume this is directed at people who are graphic designers, I can't imagine anyone else would wear this. And...as a graphic designer, I'll have to say, I definantly would not either
heso
heso on Apr 05 '06
i like the idea, to respond to the people that said its not "designy" enough are not thinking in terms of classical graphic design, they are thinking new age "i have a G5 and a font program so i should make up my own shitty font" now dont get all hot and bothered about that, its true tho, helvetica was a good choice givin the nature of the design.

Josh, i like the muller-brockmann style adhearance to the grid, but for this shirt if you were going to go off center i would make it more ovbiously purposeful.

Although if you were really gonna go minimalist-anal-helvetica-designerly, it shouldn't be on a yellow shirt, white shirt without a doubt, maybe a gray grid with black type

and finally, who gives a shit if other people got offended, the designers would get it and love it

nice idea josh

Could someone please explain what a 'designer-y' font is? Or why Helvetica, arguably one of the most important typefaces ever designered, is 'basic'. And indeed what makes someone a member of the 'basic public'?! Anal 'designer' wittering aside, I like it. And it is so true. But maybe in white?
typography57
typography57 on Apr 05 '06
I agree with avo912. Helvetica is the most 'designery' typeface there is. The design really fits the slogan.

The idea is not like all of those 'vector art' tees you see around.

I'd buy one and wear it, everyone I know would understand it. Especially the guys in my studio.

see, by the end of the day, i'd just be running around screaming at random people "NOOO! there's a double meaning! a DOUBLE MEANING! and I don't know why it's on this colour!" and then they'd send me to prison.

this would be a bad shirt for prison.

I just don't think there's enough universal appeal. Only a certain number of people would even understand it, and even fewer of them would wear it because it's offensive.

i agree with the message. (although sometimes its the clients who are more anal)...

but the context in which it's used is waaaaayyy to susceptable (sp?) to public ridicule.

no thanks.
