ASL is american sign language, which includes easy hand-shapes for the alphabet. I believe it was not used in this design to add meaning to "the hard way" :)

i don't like the way the text looks.

on the ASL topic, i'm a little torn, because of this:
the 'f' is very similar to an ASL 'x', which confused me at first. i agree ASL is clearly not the right idea here... but maybe a way to do the 'f' that couldn't be confused with ASL?

Don't mind the hairy arms, but I don't care for the "The Hard Way" text. Without the text I might buy it.

I get that it's the hard way, but all that's there is 'XC' otherwise. If you had wanted to do something with hands either use the accepted North American language or use hand shapes that aren't used in that language. As it stands the message is lost because of the precedence of a previous language.

It's like saying 'fuck' means 'dog' but we all know it means fuck because we all have the precedence of the English language. Same thing goes with hand shapes.

I'd buy the shirt if the artist put some effort into using original hand shapes that weren't confusing. I think the idea is great.

People are making this shirt too complicated. It's a great idea, and if you aren't trying to read too much into it, I think you'll understand that he's spell F U with his hands. How many people know sign language, really? The shirt is great, leave it be! <3

Ah ok, I get it now, the 'F' and 'U' need to be more clearly defined, as I didn't seem them as letter forms right away. I like the illustration and concept though.

I really didn't notice what the hands were doing at first. Which is fine, because once you're told it's unmistakable.
I think the text could be made a little smaller, though. Blend with the design more. It detracts from the main image.
