About my design
by tracerbullet
For anyone who wants to express themselves in an old fashioned kind of way. I actually had another idea for the text, but I'm seeing how this one goes over first. Enjoy.

I like it a lot! But... as a couple others have commented, I think I'd like it even more if it said something a littl e more old-fashioned to go with the motif.

I'd prefer it if the frame was oval, so it carried the subliminal idea of an open mouth, to make the gasp a bit stronger. Also, curly quote marks would be obligatory in the period you're referencing - straight quotes come later. It's a lovely, bold, simple idea, but with so little on the shirt you need to get each element absolutely perfect. With those changes, it would be on my shopping list for sure.
judeo18
judeo18 on Feb 23 '06
good concept, but for design purposes, i think the design would be tighter if the "frame" around the "gasp!" were a bit smaller. It seems a big too large, and I realize its probably realistic that way because most of the subtitles in a silent movie would need more room for sentences and whatnot. But for this purpose, I would tighten it up

@cambert & judeo18: Thanks for the constructive criticism. I actually did some research on silent film intertitles before I made this, and most of what I found showed that from the 1920s on, many of the fonts used actually did have straight quotes, which is why I went for that instead. I had experimented at first with some script-style writing, but it didn't seem to work right. Also, I purposely avoided making the frame oval because I was going more for a straight intertitle look--that is an interesting idea though. As far as the size of the frame is concerned, I did have a smaller frame originally to see how it worked, but the design seemed much too cluttered, so I opted to stay within the proportions that would be used if a longer sentence was written on the card. Thanks a lot for the feedback :-)

like black the best for the old b/w movies...a little text or grit would be cool too, like old film...5

It think a serif font would make it look less modern. Somehow the choice of "gasp!" seems weird. But I love the concept and the name :)

I loooove the concept, and agree that a serif font would be better. I'm not sure about the text at all. There are so many great things that could be put there. The top-right color scheme, with the brown, works best with the old-timey feel IMO.

For some reason, this shirt reminds me of the "No, no,no - Yes, yes ,yes" scene from _Singing in the Rain_. Good stuff.

I like the choice of word. I'm a little concerned that the serif font might take things into the world of the spaghetti (sp?) western, but the quotation marks could be a little more flowery.

5... $5 with some refinement.

   tracerbullet on Feb 26 '06
I experimented with some serif fonts, but I just didn't like how they were turning out, so that's why I stuck with this one. Thanks for all the comments so far.

RanaBanana: by "no on the text" do you mean font? because the shirt wouldn't really work without text, seeing as it's supposed to be a take on silent films.

I feel this design would be greatly improved by adding some film scratches and general "grit" on top of the design, both by adding stuff and leaving blank spots through the design.

Yeah and a serif font would probably look good too.
