Call me a sensitive liberal, but I think this shirt is a touch racist. Just a touch, but enough to make me wince instead of laughing. It reminds me of this lawsuit in which a woman who had gotten "white" sperm from a bank sued because her kid turned out black. The implied message is that the child was unwanted because it wasn't white, and that the $ from the lawsuit was going to" make up" for it. So, blackness turns into a form of injury for which only non-black people can be remunerated. So, the shirt is really only funny b/c blackness is less desirable than whiteness. I know, I know, no one cares. But it bugs me.

I DON'T think it would be as funny if the parents were chocolate and the kid plain. Also, the shirt implies a white audience, so I'd doubt if people of color would want to buy it. I just wonder if there would be a diiferent way to imply that the kid is illegitimate without adding a racial element. It becomes a joke about the kid being undesirable because it's racially different from the parents, and a lot of the humor of the shirt relies on this being "funny" to white people. Sigh...

I can't believe people are getting so offended by this. Some of you will take any chance to cry racist, won't you? The joke and design themselves have nothing to do with racism. The joke, plain and simple, is that the baby doesn't look like the white milk father. The most obvious way to do that is to make the baby chocolate milk. Or, the father could be chocolate milk and the baby white milk. This has nothing to do with racism. Trying to equate the colors of the milk with people's races is a pretty low shot.

The reason this design works so well is because the milk is chocolate. I'm sorry to you PC people, but the joke is most immediately recognizable that way. And the shirt is not just for white people. It's for people with a sense of humor.

queercat, I completely disagree that the joke is only funny because it's racial. I don't think it's about the kid being unwanted because it's "black," not at all. If anything, it's because it's not his (the dad's). The fact that it's such a contrasting color makes it more obvious. The shirt does involve race, but only that there are two different ones. Honestly, I just don't see how this shirt sends the message that black children are unwanted. There's nothing to suggest that. The dad is upset about the wife cheating - it plays on that old joke of the wife sleeping with the milkman. When people think of milk, they think plain white milk. And when they see this chocolate milk, it's an immediate visual contrast that's like, "Hey, what happened here?" Chocolate milk just works best because it's a strong contrast to the plain white milk and chocolate milk is the most common variation. It just wouldn't have the same punch if it was any other kind of milk.
I know he doesn't represent all black people, but I showed this shirt to one of my black friends - because he's my friend, not because he's black - and he loved it. He plans to buy it as soon as it's printed. I'm definitely not trying to say that this settles the issue, I'm just saying there's at least one black person who not only was not offended by this shirt but also loved it enough to want to buy it. I'm also a minority, so there's another non-white person who likes it. Think what you will, but what I and many others are telling you is that we think you're making a stretch with some of the connections you're making. |

This piece was inspired by the Louis Jordan song, “Friendship.” Which is basically Louis telling his friend to stop spending so much time with his wife, yet he’s too naïve to figure out why they are always together. “… Now I work nights and I think you’ve been very kind coming over and staying with my wife all of the time…” Infidelity, not racism, is the topic of this piece. I've got to say that this is a great shirt, but there's two things about it that bother me: A) the expression on the wifes face appears to be much too tiny - it doesn't compliment the proportions of the surronding objects very well . B) I think it'd be a nice touch if "THE STORK" was given cursive characters.

Yes, MILK, not a PERSON, although it is, as tesco said, "food with eyes" that does not make it HUMAN. and therefore the Cheating Milk Bitch was rewarded with her just "desserts." I love this idea! Great concept using milk. I gotta say, I immediately got the joke of cheating. I never once thought of pulling a race card. It's not the butt of the joke, here, it's only the device used to sell the punchline. Swap the colors, make the kid poke-a-dotted - it doesn't matter.
I'd like to have seen them with feet, though. Just some thin strokes like how the arms were treated. The bottles just seem too stiff or static. I think a pair of legs would give you a reason to show body humor and be able to add a little asymmetry to the composition. The man looks slightly larger than the woman, but not much of a difference. You could have made the man a quart bottle and the wife a pint. Great idea, though. I'd probably buy it if it were available in white. Nice work! |
