About my design
by jett
Dunno... I guess I just tried to imitate that pre-WWII style of cartooning because I have always thought they look so cute.

I love that Disney, Iwerks, Warner Brothers, and Fleischer Studios (Popeye, Betty Boop) all had a cartoon with synchronized dancing skeletons.

Copyright. Felix will mame you. Watch out!

It doesn't look anything like Felix, or Krazy Kat, for that matter (and it's 'maim' - Mame was a stripper.)

This is a lovely shirt design and I want it. You've captured the style perfectly.

I agree with illustraTom; the first thing that popped in my head was the Disney Skeletons...

Oh wow, I just was floored with a tsunami of nostaligia. Those sequences freaked me out as a child. I must hunt down those old cartoons. 5

i think it looks great and it doesn't look like felix at all, in fact it couldn't look any less like felix.

skeletons actually aren't as unfriendly towards cats as we have been lead to believe. and they CANNOT dance.
rudra
rudra on Feb 06 '06
i really like this - i loved those cartoons, and you've captured it perfectly.

i don't know if you're too close to copyright, or not. there were a whole buch of very similar ghost and skeleton cartoons from the thirties and forties. ill leave that to threadless staff.

but if this gets printed, i'd definately buy it.

You did a good job at using the old style--it looks exactly like it.

hey guys! thanks for the comments so far!

yup, Disney was one of a few inspirations, as were several other dancing skeleton toons. check it out...

Disney's Skeleton Dance -- http://drwagnernet.com/40b/lectures/12.00-Disney.1929.jpg

U.B. Iwerks Skeleton Frolic -- http://static.flickr.com/15/21247334_24bb658bcb.jpg?v=0

Fleisher Studios' Minnie The Moocher -- http://ia300121.us.archive.org/1/items/bb_minnie_the_moocher/bb_minnie_the_moocher.thumbs/bb_minnie_the_moocher_00000011.jpg

also Warner Brother's "Hittin' The Trail To Hallelujah Land" which is one of the infamous "Censored Eleven".

as for the kitty, he's an homage to Felix, Mickey Mouse, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, Bosko, and any number of white-faced button-eyed cartoon animals whose species all came down to the shape of their ears! Wakko, Yakko and Dot make brilliant fun of this concept, in my opinion.

not trying to sway your vote -- just saying in my defence that i put a bit more thought into it than pasting Felix into Skeleton Dance.

i love the cat's expression!

i am glad to see that you really did put some thought into it, but frankly that was evident without your explanation. this is a style that is classic and recognizable, without being a carbon copy of someoneelses work, you have brought something original to the table here. its cute and fun. the stylization is wonderful : )

too bad Tshirt technology cant make them all gyrating in that weird circular fashion, or bobbing up and down. that would be sweet.
artbuyer
artbuyer on Feb 07 '06
wow, this is great in so many ways. from a distance the colors look good and the pattern is pleasing to the eye, get closer and you can see the joke, get even closer and the cat's expression is perfect, and i love how his pose is just slightly different from the skeletons. the only thing i might change, and this is a TINY quibble, is that i'd like to see the cat glancing to one side, like he's watching to see what the skeletons do next. but who looks that closely at a tshirt? if i did the boyfriend of the girl wearing it would kill me. i need to buy my own. 5

Ahh! I love this design a lot and I'm glad I caught it in time to give it a 5$. You really captured the style perfectly, and I love the cat (did you give him a name? he looks like he really ought to have one). Even the exclamation point! Oh! How great.

artbuyer: to be true to the style, if the cat were glancing up, then you would need to change his whole facial expression to fear, and probably change his body language as well... as it is he's more in that phase of shock and attempting to blend in.

don't know if I commented on this one before, but I really like and instantly though of the whole pre WWII genre/style

there was this old betty boop voodoo one that I saw at spike & mike, it's seriously unbelievable, so bizarre
