there is no absolute proof that jesus ever existed. there is also a book called Gilgamesh that exists hundreds of years before the bible that has similar stories which are in the bible, one of them being the great flood....so how do you know jesus died? it's all myth, but in religion, myth is truth.

Yeah, I don't really like it - neither the look nor the content. But to jserfoss, There's as much proof that Jesus existed as there is that Henry VIII existed - if you don't see it with your own eyes, you don't have absolute proof, but secular historians mention Jesus's existence and early Christians. Outside of the Bible, there's no absolute proof that he rose from the dead.

It's perfectly understandable to be offended by this, but who says God doesn't have a sense of humor? If you can't stand back and look at yourself and your beliefs critically once in awhile (and yes, laugh at yourself on occasion) then your faith will merely stagnate. The maker of this shirt doesn't need to grow up, but there are a lot of "Christians" out there who really need to GROW.

Okay, so I get where you are going with this one, but maybe not taking it to that extreme of a level. I am not a Christian, but I find this belittling of those who suffered on the cross (and I am talking about more people than just Jesus). I would buy this shirt if he looked a little less dead and cruxified. I know that changes the impact of the shirt, but I truly believe it makes it much less offensive. :) A great concept, though!

couple of thoughts...
if Jesus was as great as we ae historically led to believe, wouldn't He have a GREAT sense of humour? i like to think so. one time, a very dear but very Christian friend of mine invited me over around Halloween. his place was decorated in anticipation of Trick-Or-Treaters. i looked over to where his crucifix usually hung, and lo-and-behold he had put a Frankenstein mask on Jesus! i really respected him for being able to laugh at himself. that being said, most of the people who really want to wear this shirt have made it clear that it is "to piss off Christians". i really don't agree with that. it's uncool to persecute anyone for their beliefs, so i have to score it low just because i feel it would be irresponsible to allow Threadless to print something that is going to be used as a device to hurt others. it's nothing against the design itself. :) |

I don't understand what's so offensive. I suppose taking Jesus out of any context that isn't strictly biblical gets you on some people's short list, and maybe some could see it as making light of crucifiction imagery, but it's really not making any anti-christian statement. I'm far from religious. I love controversy. And I love offensive things that cause ruckus amoungst tight-ass people with no sense of humour about themselves/society. But seriously, dude, this design is over the line. I wouldn't wear it, and honestly I'd feel a little sick to my stomach if I saw somebody else wearing it.
(I am tempted to launch into a philosophical debate with LOSMATTOCKS where I would discuss the fact that theMink didn't say, "Anything you don't see with your own eyes doesn't exist," but rather that you don't have absolute proof. Part of the reason this works the way it does is because that image of Jesus is such a cliche. Personally I am sick of Jesus jokes, but this is fairly original, and I do like how thoroughly plain it is.

I like the concept, but feel that the execution falls short. the treatment of jesus on the rings is great. in fact, the shirt would probably be near perfect with just that alone.
however, the judges seem rushed. the style is incongruous with the jesus on the rings. the olympic symbols on the table are unnecessary. it would be much more funny if the judges weren't all holding the same score (there's always that one russian judge who rates 5.3). but truly, the judges are needed. it would be a much more sophisticated shirt without them. nice choice of colors, though. |

tasteless and extremely rude to Christians. this is basically making fun of Christians and their beliefs, as if it's all just a joke. making fun of the death of the Lord is the stupidest thing i've ever heard. YOU may not believe it, but he died for you. and this is how we repay him. by putting Him on the rings and having judges score him in the olympics. and for all you people calling us bible-bashers/thumpers.....sorry. apparently you dont have a life. :)

Whoa, way too many comments to read... but I'll put in my two cents anyway:
I'm not going to damn you to hell, but neither do I condone this shirt. I admit it's "funny" but as a Christian, I think it crosses the line for me and I wouldn't wear it or like seeing anyone else wear it. I think God has a sense of humor but this goes much too far and it's just going to stir up negative feelings on both sides rather than end up as an appreciated design. |

Just the fact that there are 184 comments (and counting) makes this shirt successful on some level. It riles people and makes them either love it or hate it.

I am Christian, and I totally love this shirt. I believe that God has humor and we need to be able to laugh at ourselves and at our religion. After all, "God created humans to His representation. The diffrence between Him and us is that we are non-perfect and He is perfect. With other words we could look at humans as a kind of parodies of God." i can see the joke in this shirt, and part of me sees the funny side of it, and not to sound lame or anything, it is a lot offensive. if i wasn't chatholic or didn't believe in jesus i probly would just think it was funny, but i think thisi is a little to much. i don't mind jesus jokes, but it think people might be so offended because of the position he's in. it's not making fun of just him, but his death. over all though i think the design is very cleve.

I'm not religious, but senseless bashing of religions really pisses me off.
Now whether or not you meant to bash it, I don't know. However I think that other people could be very offended by this, and I don't want to purposely offend anyhow regardless of whether or not I agree with their views. I think we should be respectful, and to me, this isn't. Meh. Just my $.02 |

That shirt isn't funny. It's not even that clever or witty. It's sort of pathetic in a way. Very tasteless. What's even sadder? The fact that some even find it to be humorous. Displays the stunted, uninformed, uneducated intellect of the majority of the teen population. I don't 'hope you die' but if this shirt were alive, I wish IT would.

REGARDLESS of personal religious beliefs, this shirt is tasteless. Whether it was meant as a bash or a "praise" [but i don't think so, JOHN2], it can be interpreted in different ways by different people. I wouldn't wear something that could be interpreted as a direct attack on someone's faith.

You know, so many of the commenters praising this shirt sound asinine, and so many of the commenters denouncing it sound self-righteous and prudish.
The fact of the matter is that the shirt is clever and the humour is pretty irreverent, but it's poorly executed. The incongruity between Jesus and everything else sounds good in theory, but it smacks of a lack of effort in this case. I don't see how it's particularly offensive, though, because it's not like Jesus is eating a baby or something. Frankly, it's no more offensive than "JC was a Streaker," which is an amazing design. The only difference is that " JC was a Streaker" was flawlessly executed, and this one is a little meh. But if the shirt does scandalizes you in some way, you need to get off your high horse. Jesus may be "your LIFE" (overzealous capitalization included) but that doesn't automatically make him off limits to everyone else. Tom Cruise and Jenna Elfman may believe in aliens as part of their faith, but it doesn't mean I can't rent "Mars Attacks" once in a while and have a few laughs, now does it? That little diatribe aside, the shirt really isn't all that well done. If it were well designed (and perhaps if it included some way of more explicitly showing that the shirt wasn't outright mocking ole J.C. -- like Satan falling off the balance beam in the background, or something), then maybe I'd buy it. As it stands, I had a chuckle, but that's as much praise as it'll get from me. |
