About my design
by Nathan Griffin
One of three submissions I'm working on for this contest.

The two shirt colors that worked best were the blue and the "natural" (shown here).

I really like this design. Not sure what the Standby/on/off Symbol is for though. Good Work

Nathan Griffin on Nov 09 '05
The computer power symbol is the "central core" for the mini-earth I designed. It's my way of representing the power and activity that computers play in the world today.

this is killer! I think if the clouds would have been different it could have been better but I like this the most out of the SXSW subs thus far... $5, nicely done!

You have to be a total GEEK to understand/wear this shirt.

That being said, I dig it alot. :P
Nathan Griffin
Nathan Griffin on Nov 09 '05
Haha! Well said. I figure since the festival is FOR total geeks, the idea would go along quite nicely.

p.s. about your post on LOST episodes. Look up a program called "bit torrent." if you need help figuring out how to use it, send me an e-mail at lifeboy101@hotmail.com

guaranteed you can find them using that. if all else fails, I'll send you a few free rental cards that I've got lying around from Blockbuster. They have them on dvd ;)

I would buy this and any other product that Nathan Griffin has to offer. He has a great sense of style, panache and a wonderful sense of humor. Isaac Mizrahi, watch out!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Oy lemon, that power button is universal. My eMachine has it. Not only for Macs. Hrumph.

On the shirt: It really stands out. The color contrast between the power symbol, buildings, and the shirt is amazing. I don't know how it would turn out in real life, but right now it looks very very cool. This size is PERFECT too in my opinion.
iamtheaznman
iamtheaznman on Nov 09 '05

Nathan Griffin
Nathan Griffin on Nov 09 '05
iamtheznman: Thanks!
Obviously I'm speaking hypothetically but, if the shirt were to get chosen to be printed... threadless would make sure the colors worked. I'm pretty sure the final output would look damn close to what I have here as I've used color swatches from actual blue shirts off the americanapparel websites and I've got a shirt wholesaler catalogue in front of me to compare shirt colors with.

i got the power button thing but it made me think it was more like "turn the world on or off" sort of thing. also whats the significance of the places where they start and finish? home to the city? is that where people die, in the city? whats going on in the neighborhood in the bottom? are they watching tv or something? is that what the zig zags are? of course maybe im reading too much into it and its just a pretty shirt, which it is.
dbanker
dbanker on Nov 09 '05
Hehe. You're definately looking into it. I can't say you're looking TOO FAR into it because art is meant to be looked at and picked apart (no matter how 'pretty' it is).

The image breakdown is as follows:
You're looking at the earth. The power button was described above. The start and finish are meant to 'symbolize' (I hate using that word) the path of an idea; from the individual to the masses. The speech bubble coming from the little neighborhood on the bottom right is just my way of showing "activity" or "miscellaneous talk."

The rest of it is just "a pretty shirt" as you put it. It was my interpretation of interactivated (interactive<-- people interacting/sharing their ideas and activated<-- the earth being "turned on" from the inside)

Nathan Griffin on Nov 09 '05
Hehe. Sorry about that. I'm over at my mothers house. I'm making her vote so I had to create an account for her. I'm a dumbarse.

Excellent design! Don't think I get the start/finish thing, or the heart and the squiggly line... but it still looks awesome. I'd buy it, and when someone asked what it meant, I would say "The south will rise again!"

bunkybianca on Nov 11 '05
It may have a tinge of similarity, but who says the whole "globe" theme is now taken. When I look at the Carbon shirt I think of a carbon ATOM, not globe which is clearly what Nathan is going for here. Besides I think its a good representation of "the power and activity that computers play in the world today" as Nathan put it.
This site is jam packed with everyone and their mother submitting lame traced people vectors, one after the next, they're all the same and dont take much effort at all. This looks like work went into it.

Bravo Nathan you should be proud! I love it :)

You got yourself a doozie of a shirt Nathan, I dig it!

ps. the power button reminds me of a Mac, but I wont hold it against ya
Nathan Griffin
Nathan Griffin on Nov 15 '05
haha. the power button reminded ME of a mac as well... that was before I realized that it's actually a pretty universal symbol when it comes to computers. I've seen it on a bunch of PC's as well, it's just not as prominent on them as it is on Macs. God bless Apple for always making things pretty.
