About my design
by aidyl
greetings. there is little explanation for the subject of this shirt; it's completely up for interpretation. simple line drawing [pen and ink, not illustrator] with a minty accent. being that this is my first submission, any constructive criticism/comments would be greatly appreciated.

cheers.

I think the illustration is really good, but it is not very interpretable with the text. I would like it more without the text, and if you made the tube look more like a paint tube rather than toothpaste. 4 for now, $5 if you fix.

toothpaste sex with a fetus! ILLEGAL
aidyl
aidyl on Oct 12 '05
no sexual connotations are intended! i was equating the cleanliness associated with toothpaste to the purity of an unborn child. nothing perverse is intended with this drawing. i'd hate for that to be the interpretation.

katiefanny: personification - figure of speech in which inanimate objects or abstract ideas are endowed with human qualities
------------
wtf? you cant personify a person. or are you trying to say a fetus isnt a person? either way you are just wrong.

to me it reads more as a metaphor for how we have habits ingrained into us as a society.

i.e.: As as you sprout your first tooth, your parents start telling you over and over again, "Brush your teeth twice a day.... Brush your teeth twice a day...." Until you're grown and what do you know? without really thinkin' about it, you are brushing your teeth twice a day.

I know I'm reading too much into it, but I like that concept... very "Brave New World".... could be expanded into other realms outside of toothpaste... Just for that I think it's worth a 5.

to rhinographix: thank you, that was another thought i had while creating this piece--you aren't rading too much into it at all. i'm glad you were open minded enough to think about the image as more than just a fetus.

and no, i wasn't personifying the fetus. that would be...impossible.

I agree with Elsewhere_81. I like the illustration, minus the text. Let people interpret it any way they want.

maybe itd be more acceptable as a paint-tube as someone else suggested? Id get it either way though, and i like the style of the wording. . what would you change the caption to if it were paint instead of toothpaste?

i like the orientation of the fetus and toothpaste more in your enlarged graphic than on the tee; aka i wish it was lying on it's back more. but i love the shirt

it's interesting. and weirdly pretty. 4.

why on earth is everyone so touchy and senstive on the issue of foetuses? yes, there's a lot of debate surrounding them, but hello, we all were one once? and there's nothing 'dirty' or particularly weird about toothpaste, so far as i can see, so what's wrong with putting them together? get over ittt.

I like this. Of course, I love fetal ideas in art. I can see a whole print series of things like this -- it does have a wide range of interpretations, but I like it. Awwww....
