holden is not meant to be worn on a shirt dammit. i can just imagine how pissed he would be about this. i can also imagine how salinger will kill you for the grammar. sorry buddy, but i'm appalled.

damn me too for getting the quote wrong. okay, so it is 'meet'. i'll give that to you. but still, no matter how much you love the book, and perhaps because you love that book, you have to realize the holden's spirit is sacred. it's not meant to be put on a t-shirt! it makes him a tourist attraction. it degrades him into a pop icon, as if that he isn't enough of one already. okay, okay, i rant. i blab. my apologies.

chill weekday.

honestly fictional charicters dont get upset. and the irony would be to amusing.

i agree with weekday, this would go against the whole idea of the book. and about the "fictonal characters dont get upset" comment- the book is an unofficial autobigraphy of salinger... so tecnically the character could get upset...

Take it for what it is meant to be. He said it was one of his favorite books, so obviously it was meant as an homage instead of an exploitation. Let him bow to the graven image on Salinger in his own personal way.

*of* Salinger.

is that not 5 colours? black, three greens, and the white border on the figure.

I just loved the book and the concept, man it wasn't meant as an exploitation. It was just my mental image of the "catcher in the rye". I'n not trying to offend anyone, It's just one of the best books ever and I was trying to support it. Sorry if I offended.

My first submission...try not to embarrass me too bad :P .

i like the idea, but this would be better as a more abstract concept . . . but still, amidst all the shirts with poop jokes, overdone cutesy animals and "happy bunny" rip-offs, it's nice to see someone with a new idea- or at the very least a new source of inspiration (and one that doesn't belong in Hot Topic or Spencer Gifts). First Subs. are hard- mine didn't get total raves either, but this is a great first.

first of all, i would like to say sorry for spazzing out on you. yeah, the first submission is difficult. when you finally get the courage to submit something, there comes someone to rant at you about something that doesn't even have to do with the design. so, i'm sorry for acting like a jerk. i understand that you like to book, and that is obviously why you put it on a shirt. as a fellow admirer of salinger's works and as an audience to your work, i wanted to share my views on what effects that your design may have. i know it is not your intention to degrade the spirit of the book or the character, but sometimes things happen if you didn't mean for them to happen. okay, maybe these comments shouldn't be in a design forum, but i just couldn't help it.

anyway, design-wise, i agree with [rachel nyc]. more abstract, and more of your own input/commentary. i think it is great that you get your influence from such a great book, but often, a literal translation is neither inspiring nor original [which is what design is about]. now, i don't want to discourage you from ever submitting again. what i want to say is: try again.

on your design... nice placement
i really like how it goes right across the front and not so much of a square central image like alot of shirts are seen on threadless. (not to diss them, its just nice to see a change).

like the use of varying greens, however i do think d3d is right... haven't you used 5 colours?

As for your first design, i think you've done a fantastic job on the DESIGN work... i know it's easy for people to get carried away with personal opinion regarding the theme... but it's easy to disregard the actual design and effort put in by the designer.

I really like the use of simplicity and the figure stands out to me as such an intriguing element! love it.

hope you enjoy posting more designs...
well done

One of my favorite books as well. I dont think this shirt does justice to the story though. This reminds me more of the movie Signs than Catcher in the Rye.

is that a copyright infringment?

great idea though i just think you should make the text blend into the design more

If you were to take away the quote, take away the dedication to the book it's a weak design. In a short space the bacground repeats three times. The fuzzy photoshop "outter glow" on the layer of the character doesn't fit wit the setting behind him.
Visualy the idea shows possibilies, just needs to be reworked.
