I really like this design and the statement. Nice job. However, prepare for a barrage of nagative comments...people on this site can't handle (or don't want to deal with) political commentary.

I know Sarah, Infact having looked at some of the comment threads on a bunch of political shirts I actually regret submitting this. I fell into the political trap. Now I will have to suffer.

Here is a pre-emptive strike on a couple of points.
1. T-shirts can be political, just ask che guevara.
2. I know Bush isn't Hitler. But when I hate someone I call them names.
3.I know a politcal tee has never been printed here at Threadless. For a long time the same could be said about jackalopes and unicorns.

:)

to DaveHorowitz :

If you're gonna call someone names, then use
the names that match up to the person you're
trying to slam. You just admitted you don't
think Bush is Hitler, so your design doesn't
really reflect what you believe about him.

Once I read your comments it appears to
me that this design is just an attempt to
get attention from those prone to knee jerk
reactions from pro and anti Bush people.

I like this, the reason I don't like most political tshirts is that they are too upfront and quite frankly boring. I like how you snuck in your references. Though they are still more on the edge of obvious.

thank you for asking for comments about the design and not on the politics. I don't mind political shirts, as long as you aren't voting on the shirt because of your politics, you are voting for it because its a great design.

On that same note, I like the concept, but I would have liked it more if the Bush head and the hands were cleaned up more and weren't so static-y.

The Bush administration as nazis is played-out and boring.

So are Che shirts.

As for your design:
The cut-and-paste "I got this off the internet" look of Bush's profile and the saluting hands doesn't mix with the skewed, crispy flag background and your font selection meshes poorly with both aspects. Figure out how you really feel about Bush and try putting THAT on a shirt, because your reactionary, intentionally controversial attempt is boring.

Take the white boarder out from dubbya's head, make him look less lik you were using photoshop to make a stencil and more lik you drew it. Otherwise, it's a nice design. I wouldn't buy it but that's because I personally think it's juvenile to point at any person in a leadership position you don't like and call them Hitler, but whatever floats your boat.

I invoke Godwin's Law.

(I can't believe this has been up for like eight hours and no one's said that yet. Slackers.)

At least you actually put some effort into it. If you cleaned up the static and the nose ring and the cuffs, like sarahrea said, it'd be a good design. Love the font.

For those who dont feel like looking for it. (those who do check wikipedia)

“As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.”

Now back to design. This is why I love threadless. Those comments were great and true and they forced me to find an Illustrator tutorial and learn how to use "paths." And oh my god! I will never have an unwanted jagged line again. There is a paths tool in PS too, but it seems to slow things down quite a bit.

I am going to find a place to post the updated art and again Thank You.

I love how every time liberal rhetoric wonders its way on to threadless people like sarah127 say how people can't "handle" the truth--like your on some higher echelon; like the ultimate truth is what the liberal media regurgitates over and over and over and....................if you wanna chug what they're spewing like so much egg nogthat's fine, but I enjoy being rational.

As a nazi, this shirt highly offends me. The great Fuhrer helped with the much needed elimination of blacks and Jews throughout Europe. What has Bush done? He's inspired a few humorous calendars, a coloring book, and a measly TWO volumes of "Rock Against Bush". I think that Threadless will wait until Dubya cooks a few homosexuals in an oven before they print this shirt....

The art of design is all about communicating a thought or idea through visual media. The visual impact is just as important as the interpretive impact. Your opening comment confuses me; I personally feel that it's unreasonable to request seperation of the message from the medium. You should not only expect comments on how this image looks, you should also expect how this image makes the viewers *feel*.

That said: graphically speaking, there is a good balance of contract in your images. The little dot on the wrist of all of the arms annoys me, but that's a very minor nit.

As for your choice of subject matter: I simply feel uneasy looking at this image. It's not a design that I would buy, nor is it a design that I would wear.

Nice job on the revision; it looks much crisper than the original. Good luck on your entry.

I perfer my political t-shirts to be less obvious and make people think about what it means. With a shirt like this, people will look at it and judge it (and the person wearing it) immediatly.

I could honestly say the only place I would expect someone to wear this shirt would be to an anti-bush rally. Maybe to highschool if they wanted a day off. I guess I really wasn't thinking in terms of this particular design being a t-shirt as much as I was thinking I made it and wanted people to see it. I actually regret putting it in the running, but thats my cross to bear. I am sure the good people of the threadless community will keep it far from a printing press. Has my position on political shirts on Threadless changed? Yes, a little. Thats what dialogue can do... if you keep an open mind.

I agree with cujoelwally. however, that said I do enjoy looking at this shirt. the color scheme is great. the red white and black is amazing.

it really bothers me that on this, a DESIGN website, people can't put aside their politics and actually vote based on the design itself. o yeah and the people that say they hate politcal shirts, yeah just shut up and go away. politics is just another part of life. and political shirts have a message just like the majority of the other shirts on threadless.

I don't like the design because as little hobbit feet said, the image of bush doesn't match up with the hands or the flag. I think if you vectorized bush and the hands sharply, then used a different font, then made the frame made by the flags much taller ... then it might work ....

and all that is besides the fact that your t-shirt is a regurgatation of liberal media and is generic and doesn't promote good thought. Not that the right media is very much better, they have propaganda too, but at least they don't put it on threadless where it doesn't really belong and will never win.
LifeEqualsCheese
LifeEqualsCheese on Sep 14 '05
Bush's head looks as if it was cut out of a newspaper and the flags look like it's ClipArt. Nice try.

As for the message of the image, I might have considered wearing it as the presidential election was going on, but now, after he's been reelected already, it's no use trying. All we can do is thank God that he can't do another term.
DaveHorowitz
DaveHorowitz on Sep 14 '05
I actually first designed this shirt when bush was first elected. For his first term. I don't regurgitate the liberal media. I influence it.

I have since used it twice once to promote a party here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rockland/3790672/in/set-101549/

and once here on Flickr. As far as the look of it its been re-done in using vector graphics and is now here:

Concerning the invocation of Godwin's Law
towards DaveHorowitz's Nazi influenced design :

There is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups
that once a comparison is made involving Nazis,
the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the
Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument
was in progress.

Preface to comment: I don't like George W. Bush. But he's not Hitler.

Comment: This shirt doesn't seem to fit the Threadless style. If you want to make a political comment, something like McRevolution, a fantastic shirt, is a little more up the Threadless alley. This shirt is better suited for Moe Wampum (www.moewampum.com).

It's funny how people are so negative towards this design. If you like the design and love Bush, then don't piss and moan. This is about design, not politics, as previously stated.

I'm loving the design.. I dislike the font. Maybe just get rid of the text completely? You can tell what's going on already without it. (:

I think that the hands look a little off but I think that that angle would be hard to do. The thumb doesn't seem right and there's a button or cufflink that rubs me the wrong way on those same hands.

Ok first: you should use a photo cutout of bush where he doesnt look like he just pee himself. second, it would have been better if it would have been a real illustration instead of a cutout. third: change the colour of the Tshirt and change the font.

well, with that said you probably should print this on a flyer instead of a tshirt. And comparing the extermination of the jewes and handicap people under Hitler to the Bush administration is just a lack of iq from your side. Sure I dont like Bush, but more then half of US thought it would be a great idea to reelect him so he cant be THAT bad can he ;)?
