About my design
by Robsoul
I can only imagine the comments I'll get from this, I doubt I'll even make it past a 1.5, but all I'm pointing out is that we fight for the love of "our" country and can die in the process.

You could replace the American flag with any flag; whether it be Israeli, Palestinian, British, North Vietnamese, etc... because their soldiers fought/fight for the love of their countries and died/die. And that was the original concept, but I was limited on colors and generally the only "recognizable" red, white and blue flags are from western countries.

The "folding of the flag" in the US military is a very proud and unbearable ceremony, especially with Taps playing in the background.

OK, the patriotism thing is lamo, and the "folding of the flag" ceremony is just boring for anyone under 50, BUT the folding instructions is a cool idea.

I think I would like it better if you got rid of the vets and added another step before the last one (make it half way folded up). Congrats though on bringing a semi-cool idea to an otherwise hackneyed subject.

ok maybe get rid of the soldier guys, but leave the instructions. and add a last step, like putting the flag on a coffin.

oh and i'm giving you a $4 beacuse i really like the idea and i hope you get past a 1.5 :D

wonderful concept
leave the instructions, ditch the soliders, add the coffin step.

yeah, I'm with matahijau on this one, the coffin with the flag would be much better.

it's refreshing to see a design that isn't a drippy bleeding heart or a couple simultaneously stabbing each other in the back, this contest has been basically devoid of creativity since the first submission

delete the soldiers and add a coffin...like the steps of the flag folding.

Great idea. Very creative with a strong message. Thanks for taking a chance with your design.

Very nice.

But if you take the advice above, you can't put the coffin at the end, it'd have to be at the beginning. They take the flag off of the coffin before they fold it, and give it to the bereaved. (I'm sure you know that, but just in case...)
Robsoul
   Robsoul on Jul 31 '05
the flag is actually taken off the coffin, folded and presented to the deceased family. therefore the coffin would be at the beginning of the sequence.

I really like it. It reminds me of cub scouts. I wouldn't worry about what other people think. I mean, this isn't for a client, it's a t shirt. So show and say what you want and don't worry about it. If you want to change the vets, have the coffin, but have the flag draped over it, not placed inside because that's what they do. Drape it over the coffin.
Robsoul
   Robsoul on Jul 31 '05
They present the flag to the family, I'm sure of it. It becomes the property of the family.

do you know fokr?: technically, it is for a client. The client's The Used.
And if you'd change it, I'd suggest getting rid of the soldiers - just because there are mixed feelings about the army, especially now - and maybe adding the fallen soldier's family?
Regardless, I like your take on it.

very groovy. whoever said the ceremony was boring hasn't had a loved one put to rest in this way. it's respectful. i totaly dig it.
amandaw

the idea might be stronger with a coffin at the beginning, but honestly, just looking at it... the design itself is strongest as-is.
amandaw

also agree with thickblueink, calling the ceremony "boring" is pretty disrespectful, and i'm someone who thinks nationalism isn't a good thing.

I hate to say it, but anything that's posted on here that isn't cynical or funny probably won't go very far. To the right crowd, patriotic shirts may go a long way, but I don't think this is that crowd, especially with so many of us being from other countries (myself included).
Robsoul
   Robsoul on Jul 31 '05
I think some viewers missed the designer's point...it was not "lamo patriotism," but social commentary as in "the used." Duh. I give it a five for not showing a goat butthole, but something that matters.

First let me say that I really like this design! Well done, and finally something DIFFERENT for this particular contest!

I'm not usually one for patriotic shirts ... well, I won't digress, but I think this shirt is a fine idea.

I agree with many of the above posters - replace the soldiers. I wouldn't go with the coffin idea. Having the coffin at the beginning, as would only be fit, wouldn't fit well with the sequential steps. I like little hobbit feet's idea of replacing the soldiers with the deceased's family ... maybe three figures somewhat slumped, with one holding the flag?
silenceonmyradio
silenceonmyradio on Jul 31 '05
... that way it becomes more of a statement than just dying for one's country. It brings in the rest of the "love" involved as well.
silenceonmyradio
silenceonmyradio on Jul 31 '05
... still a $4, though.

What a powerful design

The suggestions about substituting a coffin for
the soldiers doesn't work for me. Having people
in the design is what brings out the love aspect
of the theme, " In Love and Death ".

I like the idea of adding the family of the dead
soldier, but not by removing the soldiers in the
present design. If there was enough space to show
the soldiers handing the flag to the dead soldier's
family, then your design would get a 6 from me.

Right now it's a 5 and $ Buy $
vacindak
vacindak on Jul 31 '05
Completely agree with the removal of soldiers, keep instructions. Definately a $5 without the soldiers.
vacindak
vacindak on Jul 31 '05
And incidentally, i'm *normally* very against "patriotic" stuff... but this one is _perfect_.
HippieLuver
HippieLuver on Jul 31 '05
I really like it. Anyone that has ever seen the folding of the flag ceremony ought to know that it is very emotionl - for everyone. Whether you agree with war or dislike the US, the fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter what you think. People defend this country without thinking or blinking an eye, and that's what this design brings home. I'd buy it.

luckyfin on Aug 02 '05
my two cents: i love that it has a surface "patriotism" that turns into social commentary when you look closer, great job putting up something with substance and meaning. i think the inclusion of human figures is importanat to the second reading, and i think that including the soldier's family would really add to the emotional power.
Dharma233
Dharma233 on Aug 02 '05
i think the soldiers are good, and i dont think its a "patriotic" shirt, i think it's a human shirt--everyone can sympathize with this kind of scene, no matter what country they are from
the designed just happens to be from america, so it has an american flavor, of course

I don't really get it, but I am CDN. Nice asthetic. Points for being the first used shirt without blood, skulls or dead bird.
helo
helo on Aug 02 '05
to Kyle Jay:

Based on the designer's comments, he/she chose the American
flag just because it's the most recognizable in the West.
He/she said you could replace it with any flag. Since you're
Canadian you could imagine the design having a Canadian
flag.

Though, I don't know if any other countries follow the same
flag folding ceremony America follows for burying its soldiers.
Maybe some do.

abigaildarling on Aug 02 '05
i love this as is. don't put a coffin in, i think this conveys your message very well, without the same tired skulls, hearts, yadda yadda. i might not wear it but i'm definitely giving it a 5.

matchbox05 on Aug 02 '05
I get what the designer is trying to get across here but because of current events going on in the world today I know that many people would never buy this shirt. I think the image can be misconstrued as supporting the war going on in Iraq. As a Canadian I can say that no one I know would in any way be interested in this design. You can say whatever you want about how it can represent any soldier in any country, however the bottom line is, with the current global situation, it won't be interpreted that way when people see you wearing it.
Robsoul
   Robsoul on Aug 02 '05
this is niether pro-war or anti-war, it's a statement about war, an obvious statement - people die.

as far as I'm concerned, they should give the same ceremony to every dead Iraqi as well but that doesn't solve anything.

1,806 US soldiers as of today. The British military has reported 92 deaths, Italy 25, Ukraine 18, Poland 17, Bulgaria 13, Spain 11, Slovakia 2, Estonia Thailand & the Netherlands 2 each, and Denmark, El Salvador, Hungary, Kazakhstan & Latvia 1 death each. Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 1,667 U.S. military members have died. Iraqi's? Studies say 98,000 while allied government funded groups say 24,000.

thanks for the comments thus far

As stated, the soldiers lend the 'love' aspect. As a vet, the only issue I have is your attempt to illustrate 'ceremony' with flag-folding instructions. The results is trivializing the ceremony. Having attended more than my share of military funerals-to include Arlington- I think the monchromatic soldiers soluting with the color flag in their arms is a powerful statement on it's own. Remove the instructions. Good try!

And Robsol...how many Iraqis were killed under the rule of Sadaam? Since the war began, how many Iraqis have dies at the hands of terrorists supporting a dogmatic, inflexible, brutal, and fanatical substrata of the global society? Food for thought everyone: if you have the heart of a murderer, you will find any excuse to commit it. The reason becomes incidental.

How many Kurds did Saddam kill while being supported and funded by the United States and, in particular, George Sr. Bush. I don't know either becuase the mainstream media is controled by the government and only partitions off enough information to keep us real stupid and and forgetful of events that happened not so long ago. Hey wait, what were you guys talking about.

I love the soldiers. My dad was in the Navy for 10 years and I've witnessed many a flag-folding ceremony. The soldiers at the end are very important I think because while in the military, those soldiers become part of your family and it's not just the people at home that you're dying for, but your brothers and sisters in arms as well. Very nice job and I would def. buy it.

having the soldiers there, gives the design a strong and powerful look/feeling. Having a family crying, just makes the design sad and depressing.

A military burial is one of the few things that has really awed me in my lifetime. It's a very interesting idea that immediately will, I think, connect with people who have been through that experience. Something about it really strikes me, and I would love it on white or grey in poster form.

That said though, it doesn't make any sense to me in the context of the Used competition. I know you knew that, and I understand that you probably just felt the urge when you did the design. Save the design for other things, I think it's just too provocative for this crowd. Especially the youngin's that don't want to care about anything that makes them think too hard.

I don't even know if the comments will still work because the design isn't "technically" in the running. However, it is a fabulous design.

But those soldiers are saluting with their left hands.

Just thought I'd mention that in case you ever wanted to use it for another competition.

Like I said though, really nice design.
