i love the illustration but would not wear a pun on a shirt. 4 because i cannot reconcile those two things.

Love the illustration, hate the text. Let strong images speak for themselves!

whoever said to get rid of the text...i completley disagree.

i like this a lot. it's lame & cute...but that's what makes it funny. i would buy it.

The text is worthy, but you should have done something interesting with it. Cuz straight, plain text on a stylized angled design doesn't look good at all.

gotta have the text. but it can be stylized. nice

The tragedy of all this, sadly, is that I uploaded the wrong image. I created several versions with hand-rendered type (an element common to most of my work), but I also tried a couple with regular typefaces, just for the sake of comparison. The hand-rendered was clearly better, but unfortunately, I mistakenly chose the wrong image during the upload process. And being a Threadless newbie, I was sad to learn that you cannot replace or update images. So, there you go. I won't make that mistake again. I've gotten psycho now during the submission process, checking and re-checking to make sure I have the right one...

aww!! that's sad, but it's still an awesome idea and should be a shirt, you can submitt the same idea just change the font, but honestly, either way I'd buy it.

You're right, matildaben. It's NOT a pun. It's a mixed metaphor. Thanks for pointing that out...

it wouldn't make any sense w/o the text. not sure about the font, though. can't think of a specific one that would be better. hmmm mabey look online @ some type foundries, or something. i dunno

I think the text is great, the image doesn't convey fully the mixed cliche of rocket surgery. I'd have liked to have seen the proper image but I'm 5$ this anyway.

Great concept and play on phrases. Don't cut the text, give it a custom font or something.

I think you should keep the text, otherwise it won't click when people look at it. I think this is pretty clever, it always irritates me when people say that cause there's no such thing.

I think the word "bad" and "pun" do not belong in the same sentence.

   kreamy on Jul 18 '05
Handsome imposter: let me assure you that (A) I have never seen the Mossimo shirt you mention and (B) the phrase has existed long before as an inadvertent mingking of the phrases "rocket science" and "brain surgery". Mossimo did not invent it, And I SERIOUSLY doubt my shirt looks anything like the alleged shirt. It's not a rip-off at all, let alone a "blatant" rip-off...
kreamy
   kreamy on Jul 18 '05
Yeah, I mean to type "inadverent MINGLING". Although, "mingking" IS funnier...

Haha, I would definitely buy this.

I don't see why people are telling you take the text out. I'm glad to see that most of the people that have commented can see the metaphor/pun, but I doubt most people would.

I get confronted all the time about my shirts. I hate having to explain things to people about them because they can't figure it out for themselves. I'm pretty sure if you took the text out and I wore this shirt, I would get numerous, "I don't get it"s throughout the day. With the text, it clears everything up.

This is definitely a great shirt. As someone who appreciates a good mixed metaphor, I say keep the text intact!

I was Googling 'Rocket Surgery' today and lo, here I am. It's not a pun and I love the image, but seeing as the blended metaphor is used in the negative - i.e. something is NOT rocket surgery ergo you should be able to manage - why not have a thought bubble that adds a twist, rather than just a label for stupid people who 'don't get it'?

Gary Larson is brilliant at these nuances - e.g., "When the monster came, Lola, like the peppered moth and the arctic hare, remained motionless and undetected. Harold, of course, was immediately devoured." (if you don't know that one, she is sitting in a print floral dress on a print floral chair in a room with a print floral carpet and print floral wallpaper). The genius is in one word - "When".

So for me, the guy should be thinking something like "Actually, this IS kinda tricky" or "OK, now for the science bit".

FYI, my current favorite 'new cliche' is "let's shoot this pig into space". Kind of appropriate...

This is fantastic... because my father actually says "it's not brain science" all the time.. and it's a strange thing because.. my mom and I know what he means... On a similar note, he often suggests that we should "make a bee hive"...(this is worse than a mixed metaphor..) By the way.. this is not a pun.. everyone has to stop saying that.

I love the design. I just started a postdoc with NASA and my wife just started her residency in surgery. I need to have two of these t-shirts as quickly as possible. Please let me know when they are out or if you post it on Cafe Press. Nice work.

Mixed metaphors are always fun. But being the super geek that I am, this image also reminds me of when Spock and Bones "performed surgery" on a photon torpedo...

Of course I would buy this shirt.

I say this all the time. I was all prepared to submit my own shirt, thinking I was a genius and this is such a funny original idea. When I saw yours, I was infuriated to find it was not printed. Its well done. I would have like to have seen your custom type, but it still rocks. Threadless, please print!
